Trump is worse than a liar. He is a bullshitter. Because at least a liar cares about the truth and attempts to hide it, while the bullshitter does not care whether what they say is true or false.

David Zurawik says we should "just assume Trump's always lying and fact check him backwards" because that's "how to cover a habitual liar."

[–] escapedgoat@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

I feel like we could probably get Guinness world records to give him a world record for most lies told in a political career. Maybe they could top it off with the second most to show the disparity since I imagine the second most would be another Republican and an outrageous number, but probably one tenth as many as Donald Trump.

I like how Wikipedia's main issue is that this list has grown too long to read comfortably:

Page issues

[–] SmokingCookie@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] stratoscaster@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

100 of those pages are just references lmao

[–] SmokingCookie@lemmy.world 8 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, not a bad thing IMO. They're calling him out on his bullshit and have the source material to back up their claims? 11/10 in my book.

[–] stratoscaster@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago
[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 day ago

It was already considered too long even before his second term! That's absolutely bonkers.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

One of my "favorites" (not mentioned in the Wiki article) is that in the 1980s Trump offered to pay for the funeral of a child killed by a bear ... and then of course reneged.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 9 points 1 day ago

Why not add it?

[–] frankiehollywood@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And yet he still is the president of one of the most powerful countries on this planet - twice……

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He stole the election from a powerful country that isn't a democracy.

This stresses the importance to establish democracies.

[–] KingOfTheCouch@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago

The third sub-heading is simply "Bullshit". The fact that they describe how a "Bullshitter" differs from "Liar" is a TIL for me... I never really thought about it before, but the description here is spot on.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I hate that there is still this tiny little voice inside me that says I can show this article to a Trump believer and have it make some kind of difference in how they see Trump.

[–] Hermit_Lailoken@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yeah, they will come up with some other bullshit to discredit the source. Likely bullshit espoused by the orange idiot whisperer himself.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

And that's why conservative leaders hate Wikipedia.

It organizes and filters information. Can't have that.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 122 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Haha it's so long there's a suggestion it needs to be broken into multiple pages: Screen shot of notice at top of wikipedia page stating "It has been suggested that this article be split out into articles titled 'False or misleading statements by Donald Trump (first term)', 'False or misleading statements by Donald Trump (between terms)' and 'False or misleading statements by Donald Trump (second term)'. (Discuss) (October 2025)"

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 65 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The poor article starts at his first presidency. Fuck heads been lying everyday since he could talk.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

need before first term to.

[–] cdzero@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Says 179 when I try (not sure why it's different) but only 47 of them are the actual article - the rest are references.

page count differs between international A4 vs US letter formats.

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago

21 in average per day? You need to be a professional bullshitter for that, I couldn't do that many

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 62 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Someone like Trump doesn't surprise me ... there are many people in the world that are this dumb and obnoxious. They're everywhere ... he isn't special.

What gets me is that America literally paved the way for him to gain the highest office in their country and the population still sits around complaining about it while doing as little or nothing about it all.

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 63 points 2 days ago (5 children)

The most shocking thing? MAGA still supports him, even in the face of rising prices, losing benefits and constant lies. A true cult that will be studied for decades

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My MAGA relative shared a meme on FB saying "Border crossings down 93%, gas prices hit a 4 year low, eggs down $1.8 per dozen, inflation down to 1.8%, the Media silent" with absolutely no sources.

They're not living on the same plane of reality. They don't care about the veracity of anything.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago

Right wing memes are true because of the vibes.

Left wing memes are all lies, especially the ones with sources. Because they're bad feelings with icky nasty self reflection.

[–] msage@programming.dev 8 points 1 day ago

Surprise surprise.

Fascists are exactly as dumb as they sound.

They think once every other race, religion and sexual orientation is gone, they will be in heaven.

Not realizing they are digging the other way.

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Centuries. The ripple effect this administration is causing will be felt through generations, whether or not they get their way in the end. This is scientology but bigger and if they actually succeeded at infiltrating the greatest military power in recorded history. People will be talking about these days long after we are all dead.

[–] GiuseppeAndTheYeti@midwest.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The optimist in me believes this is a statical anomaly in pendulum theory, so it will much more rapidly swing back the other direction. Hopefully to a statical anomaly in the progressive direction.

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Here's to hoping, mate 🤞

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

ok look. am I being fucked up the ass. sure. is it without lubrication. ok yeah. is it repeadately, well yeah. Here is the thing. Alls I have to do is take it until he is all done and then I am told I will get to be one of the ones doing the fucking. So you stupid dummycrats are screwed but one day I will be on top.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's not sure. What comes after him might be worse. But for the USA, this is like getting that first heart attack. It's the sign things need to change urgently. Just ignoring it happened and assuming the problem goes away when going back to the old routine is the worst you can do. Without some serious lifetime changes, the next one will be worse.

Unfortunately Democrats are the party is the status quo and Republicans only like to make things right for a very small part of the population. Nothing much will change for the better.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The "first heart attack" was George W. Bush. You're well past that now.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 2 points 1 day ago

I'd argue that's more like the shortness of breath, chest pain and nausea that come as the warning signs.

[–] Sundiata@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

so your telling me we're going to get an older president barron trump ordering the CIA to throw american critiques out of windows with 5 gunshots to the back of the head as it gets ruled a suicide?

color me not surprised.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

nothing about it at all

Third largest set of protests in American history

🤔

(Note I said nothing about efficacy, but some people do seem to think it's effective; I guess we'll see)

[–] rageagainstmachines@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What about a database containing the names and faces of all of his supporters alike?

Because the clown is the clown, but he'd be nothing without the circus.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think it'd work better if we just try to keep the Internet Archive alive. Otherwise nobody will believe the evidence even if you've downloaded it.

I support this. But it would also be great for us to capture the content within the walled gardens of Instagram, Facebook, etc.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

But isn't he the guy that tells it like it is? That's what his voters always say.

[–] invertedspear@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When presented with this article they’ll also pass out off as “politicians lie” like his list isn’t miles longer than others.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Cult deprogramming isn't easy.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago

He has very few voters

[–] Wytch@lemmy.zip 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The amount of times I've heard over the years from "common sense" folk that old chestnut that all politicians are liars, just makes my head hurt. No Uncle Dylan, I just don't think you can tell the difference between a lie and a half-truth, or even a lie and a fact. That "wisdom" is a hundred+ year old cliche and Trump's popularity proves that those people have never known what a man who is lying if his lips are moving actually looks like.

[–] snek_boi@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 days ago

Totally! I really like that the article explains that Trump doesn't lie, but he bullshits. Apparently the reason is that lying means the liar knows what's true, while a bullshitter doesn't care if the bullshit is true or false. This is one of the reasons Trump is unique.

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's a big problem in our society: when a ruler lies people get along with it but if a peasant does it they give them shit. Have you not noticed this? If a normal person, a friend, the neighbor, a worker get caught lying they get labelled and people hold a grudge against them for years, but if a politician (red, blue or whatever) tells a lie the same process doesn't apply

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Most people in the USA:

  • "He's not lying, he's as honest as my pastor"
  • "I know he's lying, but FPTP forces my hand"
