A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted, clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts: 1

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I think it is more than that, the shower is a proper refuge where external stimuli is severely limited. Sounds are limited by the running water, temperature is controlled by the water, visuals are limited, and no one is generally barging in.

When I was studying math at University I had a remarkable number of eureka moments in the shower where suddenly infinity made sense. Smart phones didn't really exist then but showers still held power as a great place to think

[–] kubijoe@programming.dev 35 points 2 years ago

Psilocybin and a sensory deprivation tank is all you need to eureka yourself up all the way until infinity is the only think that makes sense at all.

Not financial advise.

This dude literally understood infinity in the shower... Image

After finishing up calculus and differential equations taking real analysis was a trip! Basically opening up the box that is calculus and seeing why taking the derivative of a function means dropping the exponent and so much more. It frequently dealt with infinity and we went from writing long equations to solving word problems involving infinite doors. It was great

my experience studying math was the same, so many concepts clicked when i was in the shower. a bit later on, a lot of the eureka moments in research projects happened in the shower too. i’ve wondered how common it is in other fields to be doing a considerable chunk of the research in the shower.

Currently reading this in the shower...

One of those bags to keep your phone dry?

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 years ago

Most phones made now it seems are rated for being able to go underwater. I wouldn't go swimming with mine or anything, but it often gets wet and it's fine. The touchscreen doesn't really work when wet, because it thinks it's being touched all over. That's the only part that needs to stay dry to operate in the shower.

[–] mycoxadril@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s weird, I read and respond to texts and listen to audiobooks on my phones speaker in the shower all the time. There’s a ledge outside of the water spray so it’s easy to navigate. I mean texts can usually wait but the ability to continue my audiobook from my headphones to my phone speakers for showering is key.

[–] Platomus@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

It's 2 am right now and I was sleeping terrible. So I took my phone to the shower, not really to get clean, but just for comfort.

I don't understand the people who say that they use their phones in the shower. I can't even change songs on my phone if it gets water on it because the touch screen gets buggy. Also, what do you even do on your phone in the shower? It's not a hands-off activity.

[–] timespace@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I usually listen to a podcast in the shower - bought a cheap shower phone holder on Amazon. Sometimes I browse ~~~reddit~~~ Lemmy in the shower - phone is just held in front of me a bit to keep it out of the water, works fine.

[–] schizohybrid@vlemmy.net 4 points 2 years ago

Ah, another person of culture. Podcast showers are great!

I sometimes listen to music or watch videos in the shower. I double-bag it in clear plastic bags, and then put it in a safe location. When I change songs or videos, I‌ can interact with the screen like normal. Maybe it's just my phone or the plastic bags I use--maybe both?

I use something like below, minus the ziplock:

a pile of clear poly plastic bags

I suppose there are actual products meant for making phones more waterproof in these situations, but I didn't bother looking for those.

[–] ugh@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Watching videos isn't that weird. I tend to try to rush showers and wouldn't be able to watch my phone while doing 90% of my washing, but it's not that crazy. I've always used a Bluetooth speaker for listening to music in the shower. It's much easier and doesn't require me touching my phone.

There definitely are. We use them when we go kayaking. Check camping supply places.

I hold my phone in one hand, out of the stream of water, and browse ~~Reddit~~Lemmy, Twitter, YouTube, whatever I feel like browsing. During this time, I'm not cleaning myself, I'm just standing, enjoying the hot water, and reading whatever I'm reading.

With that said, I've stopped doing this because it's a huge waste of water and money.

why not take a bath? you won't waste as much water as a fully running shower.

This depends on how big the bath is and how long you stay under the shower!

The shower is where I secretly watch porn in a house of 6 people. Let the water running and start beat my meat with hot water running at my beck.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 years ago (5 children)

What does Google assistant do, am I missing out?

[–] elxeno@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

You better hope for a waterproof VR brain interface because otherwise you'll never get your hair washed.

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Nope, people use phone in the shower all the time. It’s simply a place of quiet privacy

[–] SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 2 years ago

I bring mine in shower to play music.

[–] Existential_prices@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I use my phonein the shower all the time, I watch tv or read things online, who are these people just standing in the shower, not watching tv lol.

[–] IronDonkey@reddthat.com 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Man, I can't even imagine wanting to bring my phone into the shower. "Just standing" there, alone with my thoughts, hot water relaxing muscles... Nothing needs me, I need nothing, the world is on hold until further notice. It's meditative: Everything ceases mattering, ceases even existing - to resume later, of course, but in the meantime, perfect, relaxed, complete solitude. It's perfect as it is. Music or videos or reading would ruin it. That's all outside stuff, the outside should not exist.

It never even occurred to me that people would bring phones into the shower to actually do things. Never even imagined that that was a thing. Learn something new every day.

[–] Existential_prices@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

"Just standing" there, alone with my thoughts" yeah that's the reason I have my phone in with me, usually with whatever show I'm watching at the time, being alone with my thoughts isn't a good thing for me, I need something to focus on so I don't have a stream of consciousness filling up my head.

i have used all of mine in the shower for the last 10 years or longer. i keep a dry towel where i can reach it to dry my hands if i want to switch hands, or the screen if it gets splashed.

i even bring my ebook reader in here from time to time.

just dont hold them in the water and they are fine.

[–] kresten 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Have you had a shower thought in that time?

[–] megane_kun@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've used my smartphone in the shower a handful of times already, but I usually take steps to double bag it (put it in a clear plastic bag upside down first, fold the excess, then put it in another clear plastic bag the right way up this time). I also just let it play music/video so that I can listen/watch while I shower.

It feels like a luxury to me when I do that.

[–] sab@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

And how many shower thoughts have you had since?

The way my brain works, I can have "shower thoughts" while in the middle of posting a short comment. Lack of external stimuli simply increases the noise up there.

[–] Diabolo96@lemmy.fmhy.ml 4 points 2 years ago

I don't use the phone in the bathroom. I just let my third eye open and find new ideas, fixes to my problems for the day. I can't imagine being on that state of mind longer tho, because the mind tend to wonder in dark places that forcefully resurface painful memories that lingers all day. Kinda a bummer.

[–] lain3@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 years ago

not if you're taking a bath tho

[–] jeanofthedead@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Don’t threaten me with a good time.
