The tragedy occurred Thursday when the child fell into the water and the mother jumped in after him, Swedish Maritime Administration spokesperson Jonas Franzen said. He said the child fell from a height of about 20 meters.

Odd wording to say boy died, however mother was killed when they met the same fate.

It really winds me up when they do that too much in articles. They’ll start throwing in phrases like “the singer” after they have used their name once and then “entertainer” and then “Mancunian” if they’re from Manchester and then it gets ridiculous with something like “the crooner”.

almost like... not the way a human would word it. do they just have bots scan the article and generate the headlines? or they feed it a news alert like from Reuters, for the bot to paraphrase and generate the whole thing ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This has been ruled out as an accident by Danish authorities. This is a murder investigation now

[–] WheeGeetheCat@sh.itjust.works 24 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The article doesn't say an accident was ruled out. It makes it sound like they do a murder investigation first as a matter of process to rule that out, to me.

Heres another article that mentions police don't think the death is suspicious https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/woman-child-die-falling-ferry-102243820.html

[–] Somsphet@lemmy.zip 28 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That same article also says

"However, Agnieszka Zembrzycka, a Stena Line spokesperson, told Polish media on Friday that the CCTV footage from the ship did not match this version of events."

As in CCTV footage doesn't show a kid accidentally falling in followed by a mother.

Further it was noted by first responders that the woman was unresponsive. No mention on the status of the boy other then both were flown to a hospital. Meaning the boy was either already dead, or was responsive.

My guess is from the context a murder investigation is highly warranted, and the CCTV footage will provide valuable information.

[–] WheeGeetheCat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago

Ah ok, I admit I didnt notice that bit about the footage. thanks

[–] chiisana@lemmy.chiisana.net 19 points 2 years ago

Form the article you linked:

According to initial media reports, a child had fallen into the sea and the woman had jumped in after him. However, Agnieszka Zembrzycka, a Stena Line spokesperson, told Polish media on Friday that the CCTV footage from the ship did not match this version of events.

Really sad case. Best wait and see how it develops as opposed to making guesses at this time.

It is being reported in Denmark that its being investigated as a murder-suicide.

This is in Swedish: https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/blekinge/danska-haverikommissionen-konstaterar-ingen-olycka-vid-fallet-fran-polenfarjan

Google translate:

It was not an accident but a deliberate act, the Danish accident commission stated, which is now closing its investigation into the deaths from the Polen ferry.

  • We have installed surveillance footage, says investigator Morten Frederiksen to SVT.
A seven-year-old boy and his mother died after they both ended up in the water while on the way by ferry to Karlskrona from Gdynia.
At first an accident was suspected - but it is now dismissed by the Danish accident commission.

After its investigation, the Danish investigation states that it is instead a matter of deliberate handling, reports P4 Blekinge.

  • It is correct, because we have now put surveillance footage that it was not an accident but a deliberate handling. Therefore, the police are taking over the case for the time being, says Morten Frederiksen, investigator at the Danish accident commission to SVT Blekinge.

Investigated as murder
It was on Thursday last week that the incident occurred. The deceased are Polish citizens and the ferry was on its way to Karlskrona from Poland.
Prosecutor Marie Lindström in Karlskrona has already started a preliminary investigation into murder. At the same time, the prosecutor's office in Gdansk has opened an investigation into murder and suicide, according to the Polish television station Tvn24.

The ferry Stena Spirit, which sails under the Danish flag, is registered in Denmark and is therefore being investigated by the Danish accident commission.

[–] May@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The article says

In a brief statement Friday, Sweden’s Prosecution Authority said it has launched ”a preliminary investigation where the crime classification is murder, but there is no suspect in the case.”

Maybe that is what the person meant or referrence

[–] cazyius@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What do you even do in a situation like this? If I saw my child fall from a ferry there is no way I wouldn’t jump in after even if I knew it was certain death. I can’t imagine living on just doing nothing!

[–] JoJo@social.fossware.space 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You wouldn't stop to think about it. But how is it even possible for a 7 year old to fall overboard in the first place? Ferries are full of kids running around, something must have been very wrong for this to happen at all?

[–] figaro@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You underestimate how dumb kids are lol

[–] JoJo@social.fossware.space 3 points 2 years ago

I might. But ferry companies are not generally allowed to.

[–] penix@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They should have let her save him.

[–] ThrowawayPermanente@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

There are rules in Sweden, and consequences for breaking them.

[–] Aesculapius@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Did someone throw the boy from the ferry?

[–] JohnEdwa@kbin.social 16 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The boy was wheelchair bound and the whole thing is being investigated as a murder & suicide, so yes.

[–] iAmTheTot@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

so yes.

You can't really say that when you don't fucking know. It's being investigated to find out if the answer is yes.

[–] JohnEdwa@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It's an investigation because they don't know every single thing yet, like if the boy even was alive or not when he got thrown overboard as there are eye witness reports saying he was slumped and unmoving in his wheelchair hours earlier.
What started the murder & suicide investigation that does not have any other suspects was surveillance video evidence that disproved the initial assumption that the mother jumped after him to save him. Not a lot of possibilities for who get the "murdered" and who the "murderer & suicide" labels there.

[–] unwellsnail@kbin.social -5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Hello, just wanted to give a friendly suggestion to use terms like "wheelchair user" or "person who uses a wheelchair" instead of "wheelchair bound" or "confined to a wheelchair". There are many articles explaining why in more detail for those wanting to know.

[–] Greyhost@reddthat.com 3 points 2 years ago

User of the wheeled chair

[–] Silviecat44@vlemmy.net 3 points 2 years ago

Individual who partakes in the usage of a wheel-equiped chair
