Since when has Linux been about taking the easy way out?
I mean, it's literally shorthand already for filesystem table innit?
We geeks do not care about syllables! We are the ones who "shortened" the 3 syllable "World Wide Web" to the 9 syllable "www"!
Still only 3 syllables in German π€·
"Dub dub dub" is 3 syllables
By this logic we should just fuse the f and s for a monosyllabic word.

Thanks for the information, but I started calling it f stab, an I shall continue to do so.
I literally didn't put it together that it was FS-Tab until a couple years ago when I was setting up an encrypted drive manually in /etc/crypttab, something I had done many times before, when it finally clicked.
I've used Linux heavily for about 15 years.
Same, mentally I called it f stab for years and it dawned on me after using Linux for well over ten years.
Reading this meme (a while ago) is how I found out it's not pronounced f stab
Huh.... Been using Linux for 20 years, only just learned the origins of fstab.
How embarrassing.
wow, it never occured to me that it meant file system table. I feel like fstabl would have made more sense then. although it probable would have just become "fuhstabul"

This was decided at a time when single bytes for a file name was still valuable space. This is why vi is vi and not visual. UNIX is more than 50 years old :)
