MODERATORS

I'll add more apps to this list as they are released.

Since all these apps are being constantly updated, I'll also include the version number. Please don't let my post stop you from using any of these apps. My complaints will probably be fixed very, very soon.

Summit v0.1.22 (Day 1): The app is pretty neat since they added inboxes halfway through my day. The app feels pretty neat overall. It will be much better once they add profiles. I just wish they had an infinite scrolling feature. The community selection feels kinda wonky though.

Connect v1.0.73 (Day 2): This is probably the best app for Android right now; but I obviously can't tell since I haven't even tried half of them yet. Nothing feels missing from this app. It's great and has all the features I could want from a Lemmy client. The only issue I had was that some communities sometimes don't appear in the hamburger menu. I check up on my Stephen King community every few hours but I often have to search for it to find it. Overall an amazing app.

fennec v0.0.4 (Day 3): Overall a pretty neat app. It doesn't have too many formatting options; no button for adding pics to comments. The reversed voting buttons were kinda annoying and sometimes when a post had too many comments or votes, or when I was deep into a comment thread, it wouldn't show the upvote button. Also idk if it's just me being dumb but I can't figure out how to edit posts...

Thunder v0.2.1 11 (Day 4): It's a decent app. I don't really have much else to say about it. My only complaint is that you can't add images to comments and posts. If you don't really care about that it's a good choice for your main app.

Lemming 1.0.0-alpha05 (Day 5): It feels different from the others apps I've tried so far (probably just because of the unusual hamburger menu) but it's great. Profiles and inboxes are missing but i liked the UI colors quite a lot which made scrolling through it fun for me. Also, swiping to upvote requires a very small swipe on this app so I used it quite a lot whereas I literally never used it on the other apps. Pretty great and it's probably gonna be one of the best when inboxes and profiles are added.

Missing wefwef. Every app has its flaws, but Connect is the more feature-rich.

It's easy to complain about the bugs in every one of them, but let's not forget that for the vast majority of us, we didn't even know that Lemmy ever existed a month ago.

Progress has been astounding

[–] jetsetdorito@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I didn't realize this at first, but using Firefox it just installs as a home screen shortcut, but if you install from Chrome it adds it to your app drawer like an actual native app.

[–] AusatKeyboardPremi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Well put. The developers behind the apps have been on their toes to provide a more accessible experience to the community, albeit with different visions. :-)

Huh, Fennec is the name of my web browser. Which I definitely recommend, it's a fork of Firefox stable with all proprietary and telemetry removed.

I think the information here is out of date

I'm just waiting for Boost for Lemmy, meanwhile I'm using Connect.

[–] mizu6079@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Connect feels very clean, it might be the best app out of my list.

[–] BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like it was way more glitchy last week but theyust have rolled an update because now it's absolutely solid. Thunder is nice too but it gets lost scrolling frequently. It has my favorite, probably most underrated feature though, which is the ability to tap to unblur NSFW and then re-tap to blur them again. I wish more apps would copy that feature it is SO SMOOTH, and makes me feel way better using card views and browsing with the all filter. Don't have to disable NSFW completely, but I can tap then double tap to see it and hide it again without ever leaving the feed.

Jerboa sucks ass. Liftoff is great imo.

I've been on lemmy a total of 2 hours between both apps

[–] tooting_lemmy@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've tried a few apps, but I keep going back to Jerboa

[–] MaxVoltage@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

The brown mode is what's up 🐁

[–] ratson@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Which app deals best with hiding already read content? I only found the option in Connect to hide the posts I already scrolled over. Joey for areddit had a post contextual menu item to hide everything above, that was the most convenient to me. Or is there any other technique to not to stare at the same content at each session ?

[–] p_consti@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Lemmy itself can hide read posts, so they app never even sees them; you can find this setting on your profile

[–] ratson@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

That's nice to know, thanks, and what about posts you scrolled over but didn't bother to read still could be handled as read?

[–] pizzaiolo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Keep us posted

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

The nice thing about using multiple apps is that you get tons of updates and improvements (?)

[–] StoicLime@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

Excellent review, helped me a lot in deciding my app of choice.

Liking Connect so far myself.

[–] mizu6079@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've replaced Lemmotif with Wefwef as Lemmotif doesn't support login yet. If I get two apps with missing inboxes in a row I'll open up Liftoff for a few minutes to reply to messages. Bye for now as it's hard to find this post every time I want to reply to comments.

Can't tell if you are just a power user, or Lemmy is so small it's easy to run into micro celebrities.

Big fan, can I get an autograph?

OP actually delivered! 🤩

Class act.

I keep trying all of them but keep coming back to Jerboa. It uses it's screen space most efficiently (even with all the customisations of the others) and for me seems to work the best.

Edit: Connect is probably the next best one I've tried on Android (and potentially better functioning than Jerboa), but the font is too bold however small I make it.

[–] 3v1n0@feddit.it 1 points 2 years ago

Also connect doesn't seem to be open source, that is sad.

[–] DerpDerpingtonIsHere@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been using connect and it's actually quite good and smooth.

[–] another_dudeman@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

Same here, connect gang

[–] HungryKoala@feddit.de 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Can't find thunder on the Playstore, so far it's either connect or liftoff. Connect works better but liftoff looks better. But I really hope boost for Lemmy will be released soon

[–] Paralda@programming.dev 2 points 2 years ago

You can download the latest releases on github. It's still very much an alpha, but I think it flows the best of any app I've tried.

[–] mizu6079@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Just started Day 3 with fennec. I went in not expecting much but it's great. But when I'm scrolling it sometimes jitters and jumps upwards.

[–] TWeaK@lemm.ee 0 points 2 years ago

Day 3, the first poop.

Memmy is an android client too

[–] outbound5231@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Do you have a link for the Android client? I don't see it in the GitHub repo.

you should try subscribing to your home feed in an rss reader for a day too, it's a great feature of lemmy and discourages scrolling forever

[–] Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I love RSS, but was not aware you could do it with Lemmy. Can you get the link from one of the apps? I'm currently testing Connect if that helps.

[–] Skyhighatrist@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

On the web site, when on the list. There's an RSS icon to the right of the feed selection controls. Clicking that will give you an RSS feed of your current selection (i.e. Subscribed, Sort By Active)

[–] Ludi@lemmy.ml -1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm kinda new to the more complex stuff of lemmy. What is this RSS? I know the symbol and saw it on much stuff but never really figured out what it does.

[–] Skyhighatrist@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

RSS isn't specific to Lemmy. It's a standard that has existed for a long time. It stands for Really Simple Syndication (or also apparently RDF Site Summary). It's a way for websites, blogs, link aggregators, news sites, anything really that has content that updates, to provide a simple, platform agnostic method for users to subscribe to that changing content.

You would use an RSS reader, or maybe some software that isn't specifically an RSS reader but supports RSS subscriptions (Outlook is an example of an email client that you can add RSS subscriptions to), then your RSS reader takes care of fetching updates, and you have a perpetually updating feed of your subscribed RSS content in one spot. An RSS feed item usually has a link, some text, and sometimes other content. So you can read a summary, follow the link to read the whole thing, etc.

For Lemmy, you can subscribe via RSS to your Subscription, Local or All feed, with whichever sort you want. But you can also subscribe to specific users' comments to be notified whenever they make another comment.

Waiting patiently for Sync as I keep using Jerboa.

[–] Bosa@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

Sync is now out in beta in case you didn't know. Launched today.
