"Celery tastes like water" is somwthing people only say because they heard other people say it. It clearly does not

Rhubarb: now when you bit the water with hair in it, it tastes sour.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

My sole reason for wanting to try rhubarb pie is because of people who've had rhubarb saying how sour it is. I fucking love sour stuff, and celery. So hells yeah I want some rhubarb. I never see it around here though 😬

Rhubarb pie is one of my favorite cakes. Try it if you get the chance!

Isn't rhubarb poisonous before cooking

[–] Daeraxa@lemmy.ml 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Its the leaves that have a lot of oxalic acid, the stems are edible raw, just utterly unpalateable. Although if you have a miracle berry first it is apparently delicious - https://youtu.be/hgvRoCY0hNA?t=10m26s

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 12 points 11 months ago

you can try my shower drain if you are so inclined

[–] Romkslrqusz@lemm.ee 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This is only true of the celery you find in grocery stores.

Grow some in your garden, you’re in for a world of flavor you never knew existed

Damnit I wish I had some good shit to flavor my stew with.

Glances at Mirepoix

That's really it, soup and stew. I opt for the celery root, toss it in a bag, call it a day.

I "peel" celery like how I peel a potato. So basically peel off the stringy part. Then I cut them diagonally or at a 45° angle. I then stir fry them with carrots and string peas and baby corn and shallots with some garlic and salt.

It's so crunchy and fresh tasting.

And have it taste like eating shampoo or some other chemical soup not to be left within reach of children.

[–] AnalogyAddict@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

Growing your own celery is a game changer. Most produce we get in the store is hopelessly bland.

[–] enbyecho@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

Celery loses most of it's flavor quickly after harvest. When it's actually fresh it's extremely tasty.

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The smell of raw celery makes me nauseous, especially when cut. Cooked in things I find the texture off-putting and tasteless, compounding the unwanted crunch added to something that shouldn't crunch.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Cooked celery is not supposed to be crunchy. Grandma's recipe is cursed. I bet her broccoli is crunchy too, that's why it gets a bad rep.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Broccoli should be slightly crunchy. Overcooked broc is gross

Nature's dental floss!

[–] HowManyNimons@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Even Doctor Who doesn't like it, and he wore celery as a brooch for years.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

cut celery into large chunks, put some olive oil, pop it into the oven and take it back when it starts to char and soft. mix it with mushroom saute (and stir fried beef if not vegetarian)

[–] Nfamwap@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Then take the entire pot, and pour it's straight in the bin.
