Word. Unfortunately I cannot like Ubuntu for all of canonicals decisions, but there's no doubt they have designed the most iconic Linux DE there is.

So much so that if someone who doesn't use Linux thinks of Linux, they imagine Ubuntu.

Cool. Is anything gonna happen? No? Then who cares. Just smoke and mirrors.

It will take way longer for them to shut down all individual servers than it takes them to ask 1 company to shut down all posts.

Not to mention the dissent that arrises from one server being asked to shut down, how many others would suddenly start hosting anti-turkey regime stuff.

Its like piracy: you can't really shut it down. Even if Turkey would make accessing the fediverse illegal, people would still use VPNs.

Had me in the first half xD

It's opt-in in the same way the Co-pilot that one day just appeared installed on your computer was opt-in. /s

Its not like there isn't a backlash against Android either. There's a reason why projects like GrapheneOS exist.

No worries, I also started test driving Linux a month ago in preparation for when Windows 10 stops being officially supported.

Same on lemmy... Yet, here we are? I'd call that a win.

I'd rather have a bunch of smaller dudes hosting servers than yet another US multinational that will use their money to destroy democracies around the world.

You're right. The effort of writing 2 sentences to promote a platform some people may not have checked out in some time, if at all, was definitely wasted. I'll remember that next time.

Its good to know this will be optional in Europe. But at this point, do I even care?

2025 will be the year that Linux will see an influx of users, and it will all be due to Microsoft's anti-consumer practices.

Not sure if you were joking but Mastodon has substantially more users than Lemmy.

Averaging 1 million users/month versus Lemmy's 50k.

The Marxism/Privacy intersectional analysis is something I never expected to see. But I welcome it with open arms.

I'm glad this community isn't just right-wing libertarian tinfoil-wearing loonies.

For the people who were using FREENOW (originally from Germany), I just received a notification on the app saying it is now being acquired by Lyft, an American company.

Just thought I'd share it here.

Edit: If you're planning to delete your account, see the comment by Alaknar on making a GDPR request. It's quick and easy to do.

Disable DMs? (lemm.ee)
submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) by Pirata@lemm.ee to c/lemmy@lemmy.ml

Is there a way to disable DMs? I keep being spammed by users from an instance called sh.itjust.works promoting some weird out-of-platform personal profiles.

They usually send this stuff and then immediately seem to get banned, but I still see their stuff since images are displayed by default. Seems like a big oversight to allow this.

Is there a way to block receiving DMs? Or at least have some sort of Accept/Decline dm feature like on Reddit?

Pretty please. I got used to using it on the other platform that shall not be named, and now I can't live without it.

It's free, helps low vision readers and can be downloaded directly from the Braile Institute.
