  1. People in many countries are boycotting US products as a response to their new tariffs.

Are you suggesting Trump is coming to take our chickens?

What about Android? I don't see dark mode in options.

Less than half, that actually surprises me. I honestly assume most people I meet online are Yanks.

More snow than I've seen all winter in western Canada.

I've put in for a midwest.social account, too. Thanks.

I'd like to leave this up for at least a full 24 hours so that people have a chance to chime in, but this does seem to be the general consensus. I've gone ahead and added you as a mod. Thank you for volunteering!

Thanks, Blaze. Its not ideal but life never is. She's tough, I'm confident she'll be okay.

I appreciate your perspective. Thank you.

TLDR?

There has been some drama here on midwest.social, and those troubled by it have made a sister community at !lotrmemes@lemmy.dbzer0.com. I'm looking for your input on how to move forward.

Where have you been?

This started unfolding at the end of 2024, unfortunately along with a pretty scary decline in my partner's health, which has resulted in Lemmy taking a backseat in my life. This is ongoing, and highlights the immediate issue of !lotrmemes@midwest.social being largely unmoderated, which I'll address below.

What exactly happened?

It feels irresponsible for me to give my own take on something that happened in my absence, but here's a timeline as I understand it:

  • Luigi shoots a CEO.
  • User A comments something to the effect of "someone please kill this other person" on a midwest.social community.
  • User B reports the comment.
  • Admin at midwest.social bans User B for being a "Libbety lib lib."
  • Users start moving away from midwest.social.
  • A new LOTR Memes community is started on lemmy.dbzer0.com.

Please have a look at https://lemmy.cafe/post/10511187 and form your own opinion.

What happens next?

I have seen calls to lock this community and sticky a post redirecting people to the new community, in an effort to consolidate users in one place. On the other hand, there are people still using and enjoying this community. I don't want to abruptly take that away. One of Lemmy's major benefits is user choice, including choice of instance, and if people are fine with staying here, who am I to force them out?

I would like to hear from the users here. This is your community. If you want to keep it separate, we will. If you want to fold in with the new one, we will. If we do keep this one open, we immediately need more mods, so please PM me if you're interested in helping out. My partner has another hospital stay for a pretty major surgery at the end of this week and I will likely be dropping off the earth for awhile after that.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Zoidsberg

EDIT

The majority seems to want to keep things running, so that's what we'll do. I won't be stepping down as mod but I will be absent for awhile. I have every confidence that imaqtpie@midwest.social will keep things under control, and that this community can happily coexist with our friends on dbzer0. Personally, I will be subscribing to both.

The world is full enough of hurts and mischances without wars to multiply them.

Can you elaborate on the uselessness of a VPN?

In the trash, immediately! In. The. Trash. Can't fucking stand this

I've been dailying the same Mint install since I gave up on Windows a few years ago. When I was choosing a distro, a lot of people were saying that I should start with Mint and "move on to something else" once I got comfortable with the OS.

I'm comfortable now, but I don't really see any reason to move on. What would the benefits be of jumping to something else? Mint has great documentation and an active community that has answers to any questions I've ever had, and I'm reluctant to ditch that. On the other hand, when I scroll through forums, Distro Hopping seems to be such a big part of the "Linux experience."

What am I missing?

Also answers to Beaner, Wiener, Fart Dealer, Garbage Eater, Garbage Girl, Meatloaf, Black Forest Ham and, occasionally, Boner.

Every day when I get home from work, I get down on the floor to greet our bulldog, and she sneezes directly into my face. I want to be clear that this is not the typical playful half-sneezes that some dogs do, although she does do that with other people. This is an intense, wet, genuine sneeze.

I have tried ignoring her when I get home, thinking that maybe she just needs to calm down a bit, but she will follow me around the house and start whining if I don't acknowledge her. It makes me too sad. I have to give in.

I have a pretty dirty job so I usually hop right in the shower when I get home anyway. A bit of canine spittle really isn't that big of a deal, in the grand scheme of things. I'm really just curious about whats going on. Is she allergic to me?

Thanks

All I need is something to trim time off the ends of a video and knock it from 1080p down to 720p.

Southwestern BC, Canada. We think he's a European mantis.

He climbs to the top of the glass, spreads himself out, and floats around upside-down on the surface. A tetra bumped him, and he curled up and sank to the bottom, so he definitely wasn't stuck up there. The second he hit the substrate he went right back to the glass and did it again.

Why? Whats his deal? We have a handful of assassins and none of the other ones are doing this. He only does it when the light is on.

Pic from above.

I can fall asleep almost anywhere. I routinely fall asleep in the break room at work. Once, I was helping a friend fix his car, and I fell asleep on his garage floor when he went inside to get water.

But in a hot metal tube tearing through the sky, with my neck all kinked? Get out of here, man.

I followed this guide to set up a Matrix server on my Pi. The only hiccup I ran into during setup was under "Setting up Synapse server," step 11, the "Registration" section wasn't present in homeserver.yaml. This server is meant to just run bridges to WhatsApp/Facebook/etc. so I wasn't too worried, and forged ahead.

I'm getting the title error when trying to connect via Element. Federation Tester gives the following error:

Get "https://[my ipv6 address]:8448/_matrix/key/v2/server": dial tcp [my ipv6 address]:8448: i/o timeout (Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers)

Any help would be very much appreciated.
