I have been using Wrye Bash on Oblivion. Not sure what your system is like but I'm on Arch and using a slightly older version of WINE and made a bottle for Oblivion. Just run WB under the bottle. I have the GoG version of Oblivion so not sure if that matters.

I see being facetious is lost. Yes I know they don't use a lot of space, however, they do package all their own dependencies. That means you do end up with duplicates.

As someone who isn't a woodworker, but enjoys having things that make me happy- if you like the design and it makes you happy, go for it. You have nothing to lose but time, and if you learn something in the process (i.e. those tricky looking joints you mentioned) then you are ahead no matter what.
