Cool!

Joined, and retrieved a remote post https://piefed.world/post/250704 that was missing when viewed from piefed.social.

I also joined from lemmy.ca (completely empty atm), so hopefully that will help federate it there.

Legit streaming availability for Twister's Revenge!

Global:

Free, available at least in my location, Mexico:

Does this mean Ten Forward will be moving to PieFed?

[–] klu9@piefed.social 1 points 17 hours ago

Yeah, after I posted that, I thought that probably rules out 95%.

But as the linked article mentioned, Cat III certification was sometimes given for other reasons, like insufficient condemnation of criminals, e.g. A Better Tomorrow. Also, (presumably consensual?) sex comedies, like Sex & Zen.

Eastern Kicks has a review of Runaway Blues which apparently earned it Cat III classification from several scenes of brutality. I might be able to handle a film where it's a few scenes, but not those where it's the major focus (Dr Lamb?).

[–] klu9@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

The poster is emblematic of that whole phase of HK cinema, doesn't mean I actually want to watch rapes being depicted.

So, yes, I am not into rape.

[–] klu9@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (7 children)

:D

Any recommendations outside of gore/torture/rape/cannibalism etc (as I'm not into those)?

I'm willing to give a film like Naked Killer a try, but it's not available on any of the free or even paid (Amazon Prime) services I have here in MX. Not even (or perhaps, especially not on) Chinese ones like QQ Video.

(Although a Tubi search for "naked killer" did turn up the Wong Jing-scripted Naked Weapon (Wikipedia (HK, 2002) which I might have to check out.

[Apologies / let me know if this is off-topic for B Movie Bonanza]

Two-part article from Eastern Kicks

TL,DR:
Despite being one of the world's centres of film production back then, laissez-faire colonial Hong Kong didn't have any system of film classification or censorship until a film came out in 1988 (Men Behind the Sun) that was so egregious, it almost single-handedly created the political impetus to introduce a film classification law and system.

The most restricted classification was Category III, which made it a crime for anyone under 18 to watch.

Rather than shut down the worst productions, it unleashed a boom as many producers treated Cat III status as both a licence and a badge of honour, indulging in the greatest excesses in exploitation cinema: soft-core porn, torture, rape and cannibalism. And, to be frank, a lot of misogyny :(

And unlike an X rating or NC-17 classification in other countries, Cat III certification wasn't the kiss of death for mainstream respect and business, with Cat III films shown in mainstream cinemas, actors appearing in both mainstream and Cat III films, and some Cat III films even winning mainstream awards. (Actors like Anthony Wong, Simon Yam and Shu Qi got their start and first critical acclaim in Cat III exploitation.)

The boom faded as the 90s ended, as the novelty wore off and Hong Kong came under PRC control, but there are still some occasional Cat III films made, often in the sex comedy genre.

Personally, while I watched a lot of HK movies in the 90s, I wasn't into Cat III (although I would curiously read about their excesses in mags like Impact or zines like Trash City [some images NSFW or gory]).

I got thinking about Cat III again when watching (the absolutely not Cat III) Future Cops (from @LaurenceWolse@feddit.nl's post). I chuckled when at the end Chun-May almost kisses Ti-Man but is too chaste to go through with it, given that the actress Chingmy Yau was largely famous for doing Cat III softcore porn / "girls with guns" exploitation flicks like Raped by an Angel (1992) and Naked Killer (1993), by the very same director as Future Cops, Wong Jing.

Eastern Kicks has a category ;) called Category III to see some reviews of Cat III films.

City on Fire search for "category III"

City on Fire review of the "original" Cat III film, Men Behind the Sun (a film not actually meant as exploitation but to highlight the then relatively unknown war crimes of the chemical and biological warfare experiments of Japan's Unit 731)

Men Behind the Sun comes with the reputation of being one of the most controversial movies ever made, often mentioned in the same sentence as the likes of Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust, and Japan’s Guinea Pig series. The facts certainly indicate the same – it holds the distinction of being the first movie to be rated Category III in Hong Kong, has been released in very few territories uncut, was originally banned in Australia, and caused such an outcry in Japan that the director received death threats.

Watched it last night, on Mometu.

  • I hadn't seen it before.
  • Mometu had the version that ends with || her daughter and the birthday cake ||, which I believe is the slightly longer version.
  • It was fantastic!

  1. Can a mod add tags to someone else's post?

  2. How many tags are possible and will be shown?
I just started a movie community, with tags for actors etc already at ~30. Potentially that could increase to... hundreds? More?
How many will display? Will it always display all of them or can it be hidden /drop down, like spoiler text? Perhaps partially, e.g. the top tags are shown by default but you have to click "Expand" to see the rest.

  3. What about tags in places other than the Piefed tags entry field? E.g. in post body, comments etc. Are they... "recognized" / "effective"?

  4. Dammit, I had one more, can't remember it now.

I've edited posts in the past, but now when I edit and click the "Publish" button, I get the following error:

Now arriving internationally from Japan.

Trailer:

Hot Spring Shark Attack

Via Metafilter:

Hot Spring Shark Attack had its world premiere last year at the Tokyo International Shark Film Festival and its US premiere recently at the Chattanooga Film Festival. Early reviews from Letterboxd, Bloody Disgusting, and Spooky Sarah Says. Evidently, it's back for this year's Tokyo festival too, {...}, plus Game of Shark, the third installment of the Ouija Shark franchise...

Which raises the question... are we going to do anything for Shark Week (July 20-28 IIRC)?

I want some links to community posts in my community sidebar (e.g. to posting guidelines, resources etc) but which people can interact with even if they're on a different instance, i.e. comment, vote, etc.

At the moment, I link to the same page twice in two different ways:

How should I do it?

(This isn't necessarily a PieFed issue, more an entire Fediverse issue. I'm still not 100% clear how to link to Fediverse content in a way that a Fediverse member can actually use.)

Do all mods have equal power over a community? Or is there a "supermod" / "owner" / "creator" who has more power than the others?

E.g. if I make someone else a mod of a community I created, can they do everything I can? Even remove me as a mod?

Issues with stickies (piefed.social)
submitted 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by klu9@piefed.social to c/piefed_help@piefed.social

In my community !action_movies@piefed.social , I've made two posts sticky (the "Welcome" post and the "Free, legal movies" post) using my Piefed mod account, but:

  • viewing in PieFed, neither post is at the top. (They do have inverted angle brackets around the title.)
  • viewing in Lemmy, The "Free, legal movies" post is sticky (at top, with pushpin icon) but the "Welcome" post isn't.

How do I get them both displayed at the top in both PieFed and Lemmy? Or is this a bug?

B Movie Bonanza free streaming review

Looking over past posts here, I've collated a few free streaming links from:

  • free licensed movie streaming services like Fawesome, Plex and Tubi that do not require an account

  • licensed (or licence-claiming) channels & uploaders on user-upload platforms like YouTube and the Internet Archive

  • JustWatch & Reelgood links to check legal streaming availability (even though the results are not always reliable)

A few notes about the links

Location affects availability & language options

I'm in Mexico and I know about availability and language options for these streaming sites here in Mexico. I've only posted ones in English (or original language with English subtitles, when applicable).

Please give feedback if the movie is available or not in your location, or if there are more free & licensed sources in your location.

The links I give will often include "mx" or "es-mx" in the URL but will often change to your local country's version when you load them. But with some sites (e.g. Just Watch), you might have to manually pick your location from a list.

Devices

What devices you use to watch might also affect things. Not only availability and language options but other issues, too.

E.g. Watching FreeMovies+ on a Roku device, I get full screen. But watching FreeMovies+ in my web browser, I get navigation bars at the side and the top.

Timing

These links work at time of writing. Licensed streaming is notorious for changing frequently, so they might not work when you try them.

Ads

Some of these platforms are supported by ads. Decide for yourself about whether or not to disable your adblocker, and other techniques (e.g. view the site in a separate container or a different browser to minimize data collection; clearing cookies etc).

PS I did this manually (looking at old posts, searching for title in site 1, then 2 etc, copying & pasting urls etc).

  1. Anyone out there know how to simplify or automate this?
  2. Anyone know how to automate this for someone making a new B Movie Bonanza post? E.g. you just insert movie title and year, and the automated system spits out all the URLs, if available, for the various services?

I created a new community on PieFed ( !action_movies@piefed.social ) and tried using https://lemmy-federate.com/ to get federated across other instances, but get an "instance is not registered" error.

Apparently, there are... issues?
https://lemmy.ca/post/45479147

So wondering about other ways to get federated.

  1. Can I do it myself, at least for the one other instance where I have an account (lemmy.ca)?
To me, at the moment it seems a bit 'chicken and egg'. I can't see it on lemmy.ca, so I can't subscribe to it from lemmy.ca. And lemmy.ca won't federate it until I subscribe to it. I must have it wrong.

  2. Promo communities: I know about those, but I don't want to use them just yet. This is a "soft launch" until I get more familiar with having a community and get some more content into it.

  3. Other ways?

Thanks.

I'm trying out starting a new community.

I wanted to crosspost some posts I already made elsewhere, e.g. https://piefed.social/post/984528 / https://lemmy.ca/post/46999890

But there's no crosspost button.

  1. Is there a way to do it?
  2. And I'm curious: why is there no crosspost button for so many posts?
