Anything with proteins can get prion disease. Since they're reptiles and their genome is a lot older than ours, there's a pretty good chance something that affects us might not affect them in terms of proteins. I don't think birds get prion diseases bc it hasn't been really well studied yet.

7th or 8th gen Intel?

[–] notthebees@reddthat.com 2 points 5 days ago

I guess. TF2 will run on Chromebooks so idk about that one.

If the price is good then it's fine. Intel already has the funny ai card that maxsun makes.

What about the monolithic socs? Idle power on my 5825u is better than my i5-1135g7. My i7-8550u is in between.

They can't even do that anymore. sgx had a bunch of vulnerabilities and as a result, that service has been disabled.

I'm well aware. I'm one such tinkerer. Its a catch 22. No good software support means that no one really wants to use it. And since no one really wants to use it, amd doesn't make stuff. Also amd is using much denser memory chips so an easy double in vram capacity isn't as possible.

It took them a few months iirc to get proper support for 9070 in rocm.

People who say buy Intel and amd probably either did or will when they upgrade, which is probably not anytime soon with the way everything seems to be going.

7900xtx is 24 gb, the 9700 pro has 32 gb as far as high end consumer/prosumer goes. There's no point of shoving that much vram into it if support is painful and makes it hard to develop. I'm probably biased due to my 6800xt, one of the earliest cards that's still supported by rocm, so there's a bunch of stuff my gpu can't do. ZLUDA is painful to get working (and I have it easier due to my 6800xt), ROCM is mostly works but vram utilization is very inefficient for some reason and it's Linux only, which is fine but I'd like more crossplatform options. Vulkan compute is deprecated within pytorch. AMD HIP is annoying as well but idk how much of it was just my experience with ZLUDA.

Intel actually has better cross platform support with IPEX, but that's just pytorch. Again, fine.

They have the hardware for hpc, with their instinct cards. Software support is slowly growing. Rocm is fine, ZLUDA is pain and suffering on amd cards. I have a 6800xt, so old but decently supported and even then it's annoying

They did. There's just no new amd mobile gpus. Like I think they only have 100 watt tdp or Max cooling to work with and the 7700S is the fastest amd mobile gpu currently.

If amd makes a new mobile gpu, framework will probably make it into a module.

There's a baby somewhere near my house. Will send when I see it.

I have a pretty old laptop with an AMD dGPU and I am trying to do OpenCL compute on it to make sure that device switching is handled correctly in some stuff I am testing. All the instructions I see to install amdgpu drivers is to have --no-dkms as an install flag. Doing amdgpu-install --usecase=opencl --no-dkms --opencl=legacy results in ERROR: using '--no-dkms' with '--opencl=legacy' is not supported

Specs:

HP Pavilion 15-br158cl

CPU: i7-8550u (HD 620 iGPU and this has working compute)

GPU: Radeon 530 2 GB DDR3

RAM: 24 GB

OS: PopOS 22.04 6.12.10-76061203-generic

Clinfo -l output

Platform #0: Intel(R) OpenCL HD Graphics
 -- Device #0: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 [0x5917]
Platform #1: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing

As you can see, only the platform, not a second device. Is there anything that I am missing?

I did post this on reddit in the PopOS subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/pop_os/comments/1kvza44/is_there_a_way_to_use_amdgpudkms_without_bricking/
