Someone I know who loved her cat in a way that I don’t understand, and I love cats, insisted on showing me a picture of the expensive, elaborate silk-lined coffin she got for her cat with the dead cat lying in it. I… yeah.

Ah if we lived near a drafthouse, maybe we’d have a pass too! But the nearest is an hour away, plus we have kids who would need a sitter so the cost ends up being more than just the movies for us. But he’s also complained about the cost of three tickets and snacks when taking them to a kids movie. So we can’t win basically.

Totally agree about the Marvel stuff! We feel much the same way.

My husband really loves the movie going experience but even he is having a really hard time justifying the amount of money it costs to see a flick in a theater. Whereas I would prefer never to leave my house so I’m cool with staying in to watch something, even if it means I have to wait for it. (Except for Dune. We make an exception for that. I’m sure there will be other exceptions in the future.)

If tortellini counts, that’s my preference.

Honestly that’s a great mental health strategy!

I hear what you’re saying and I’m not saying you were wrong in your usage. The issue I think most women (including me) have is when men refer to us as “females” while not referring to themselves as “males” is that it makes us feel like they view us as not fully human, or like a lesser animal. Problematic people are often trying to feel superior to others, whether via race, class, religion, age, etc etc, and certainly speciesism (is that a word? Autocorrect thinks so) can play a role.

That’s still a bit different than saying “males” or “females.” Using those words as nouns makes it feel like a nature documentary narration.

I used to have a kitty who drooled when she was happy. (She passed a few years ago.) She was a grumpy thing, but occasionally she would deign to give us some love and get some in return, and after a few minutes she’d shake her head and it would go flying everywhere, lol. Sometimes I wonder if she liked living with us, being so grumpy at times, but she must not have totally hated it.

Gotta love how the GHOs always look like they’ve been startled by the paparazzi. So derpy

I agree: big head, rounded tail feathers. But it’s just a guess. Even Audubon says it can be a toss up.

In my neighborhood, I always default to Cooper’s. One of the things I look for is the angry eyebrow.

You could say we bought our Teslas “for the environment” in a way, though a bit roundabout. When we bought them (2018), it was after having previously leasing a Leaf which had shit mileage and poor performance over 40mph. We wanted to signal to the industry with our dollars that we wanted the EV movement to succeed. Because apparently money is the only thing they listen to. We knew full well that EVs were only a step toward a greener future or whatever but we wanted the industry to take that step and understand that being environmentally friendlier was important.

Flossing: pretty good. I occasionally forget but most of the time I realize it pretty fast because my teeth feel…thick or something.

Cutting out Diet Coke: quite good. I was super disciplined for about four weeks before I had one, in part to see how bad the cravings would be afterward. It was okay, but at the same time I could tell how easily it would be to become addicted again. Have only had it one other time (yesterday) but I’m sick so I’m giving myself a pass.

My 10yo is quite skinny. My husband was also skinny as a kid so generally we haven’t worried about it much. But he just had his yearly checkup, and for the past two years he’s gained very little while still growing taller, and his BMI is dropping off the chart. The doc ordered a blood test and it came back fine, no celiac or thyroid issues (PHEW). So we’re back to trying to boost his intake.

He’s not a super picky kid but he can be reluctant to try things. He eats a lot of classic kid food with no problem: mac and cheese, pizza, burgers, chicken nuggets, etc. He also tends to eat a ton of fruits and veggies, which I don’t want to discourage or course! I might try PB&J again but he doesn’t love it like he used to.

The doc did say that she tends to prefer that kids eat their calories instead of drink them, but if a protein drink works for him, it’s an option as long as it’s not displacing solid food. I picked up one by Orgain the other day and he doesn’t seem overly thrilled with it. I’d be curious to know if other people have tried other brands and what their kids thought of them.

Anyone deal with this? What worked for you?
