"But most significantly, Microsoft has made Recall a feature you must opt in to using rather than opt out of using, and it's possible to remove it completely."

Important bit

There's an axiom I don't know the provenance of:

"You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into"

It's not about the truth to them it's about making the scary unknown go away so they can get on with their lives. Nevermind the fact that their ignorance is causing their own demise and that of everyone else....

It takes an emotional shock, most of the time, to break that kind of deathgrip on a false reality

Same for dogs and cats, but that's a hard sell

What do we use when they start checking the trees with metal detectors?

I don't think cinder blocks would work as well

You know valve isn't Microsoft right? Those are two different companies with different agendas?

Steam asking for consent for a survey doesn't make up for the lack of consent in updates pushed by an entirely different entity

Agreed. My favorite is still Raft

I'd recommend Stephen Baxter's "Ring" novel as a primer on cosmic strings, domain walls (the shell-like mass described here) and using wormholes for time travel.

Basically covers all of the funky science described in this article

No hate! Just need to make sure people know so they don't create a bazillion threads without realizing it, or how to stop them effectively
