I disagree with the article you linked. It seems the author believes the purpose of decentralization was to give instance admins "power". I've always said that the Fediverse was just a thousand little Twitters, but some people don't mind that at all. If you just want to run a little community where you can protect yourself from outsiders I guess it's nice.

The way I see it decentralization is about preventing a gatekeeper not making more of them. If you never got your account (and all the content and followers you created with it) taken away by a power tripping moderator you may not understand. You can't deplatform someone from Bluesky, or Nostr, and that is a feature.

Just run your own router and block all the outgoing connections you don't want. I love my EufyCams, they work great and store video on premises. All I have to do is block the connections it makes to send video previews in push notifications.

I need a sign for my security cameras that says something to the effect of "recordings are kept on premises and not made available to anyone outside this house" so my neighbors don't think I'm a narc.

Better question is how long does the world watch as they do it? We've been here. Fascism doesn't simply stop.

That's not how AI works

From Australia to Canada, Big Tech has resisted lawmakers' efforts to force them to pay news publishers for carrying their articles. Now, that battle is playing out in California.

I use the #Infinity app on #Android, it's on #Fdroid so it's open source.
