Small update! The Castigator now has a gun and I've started Chaos-ifying the armor panels. How spikey should I make the carapace?

So other than the Horus Heresy books which kinda-sort-of build on each other, you really can start with any 40k book that doesn't have a "Number # of a series" on it. The intention with most is that "any book is someone's first book" so while you'll pick up more if you've read other books there's little "required" reading.

First of many! Great job, that trim is notoriously difficult to get a smooth finish like you have, be proud!
@twotonebax
Paint your "underlayers" - as seen here it's bare metal & rust.
Varnish the model and let that dry for 24+ hours.
Then get some hairspray and salt, "prime" the entire model with a thick coat of hairspray; while it's still wet sprinkle salt all over it so the salt sticks to the hairspray. Let dry for an hour.
Paint the model whatever color you want the model to be when done.
Once that's dry using an old toothbrush and hot water, rub away at the salt, it'll dissolve and come loose.

The call of the Dark Ones is hard to resist once it has wormed its way into your mind.
Kind of like a certain song that will go unnamed that'll be blasting on every speaker in a few short days.
@setsneedtofeed
That's where it starts! After applying crackle paste it comes out looking more like Chaos corruption breaking through the ground. I'll take another picture after I apply the effect.
@warhammer40k
Live and learn: I may have over done it on the weathering. I think this is a case of "less is more". I'm going to let it dry a bit and then go back with a light drybrush to bring back a bit of the green. That said, this technique is really cool, just not for this specific application.

The Court of the Mortive Expanse arose when a Knight world was isolate upon the opening of the Great Rift. Warp-time-shenanigans resulted in them defending themselves alone for a century or more. When contact was reestablished with the Imperium, instead of sending the requested aid, the Dark Angels chapter arrived demanding supplies and when they didn't immediately comply they were declared renegades. Already strained to the breaking point, the Court finally succumbed to Chaos.

How's this? (Another update, I swear I haven't been doing this -all- day... just most of it.
