@todayilearned Today I learned that Wernher von Braun (of Nazi Rocket Scientist infamy) wrote a sci-fi novel about Mars colonisation. In 1971 a South African racist named his son after the book's Martian Leader: Elon

I've only bought ic! Berlin and Mykita the last 3 pairs of sunglasses (both are German companies). They both use these tensioned metal hinges instead of screws, which makes them hold up really well. I consider them both BIFL brands that are infinitely better than that luxotica crap.

Highly recommended!

Ooh, this is fun. Another piece of data is that we have most of what appears to be the zip code, so we can get pretty close to knowing where they are located:

It shows multiple routes, although I typically use the fastest / default.

The Opal apple looks like it shit itself. I apologize for being uncouth but there is no more apt observation. Just look at the top of it. The Opal apple looks like a jaundiced, freckled, unwiped anus.

I moved to GrapheneOS a few months ago and haven't really looked back. Someone else below covered using the Sandboxed Google play / Aurora Store (I use both, in addition to fdroid).

Although I could conceivably install more apps, using GrapheneOS had made me think more deeply about whether I actually need an app, instead of using a web browser. It's true that using the web is a degraded experience (likely intentionally so, in some cases), but this is a cost I'm willing to pay for better security and privacy.

Finally, I wanna rep Magic Earth as a solid alternative to Google maps. Route finding is accurate and includes traffic warnings, etc. It uses OpenStreetMap data FWIW.

Huh, interesting. It very well might be - I am on the dbzero instance, which generally does not defederate like .world or beehaw. Couldn't tell you why .online is defederated from that community instance, although I assume there is some record of that somewhere.

The capital inaugurated its first skate park this weekend at a ceremony attended by foreign diplomats, sports officials and young athletes, in what many hope will be the beginning of a drive to build more spaces for recreation and creative expression.

“I have been waiting for this moment for five years,” said Mohammed Al-Qadi, 19, one of the park’s first visitors on Saturday.

Yep, especially now that the government has signaled relaxing H1B regulations....

Because it occurred approximately 42,000 years ago, the period has been termed the Adams Event or Adams Transitional Geomagnetic Event, a tribute to science fiction writer Douglas Adams

Two of the scientists use the word "exotic" in the new possibilities:

At the same time, this type of old environment is making us rethink our standard FRB progenitor models and turning to more exotic formation channels

If yes, it would make this FRB only the second FRB known to reside in a globular cluster. If not, we would have to consider alternative exotic scenarios for the FRB’s origin.”

I'm curious what constitutes exotic in this context.

I use graphene OS and Magic Earth instead of Google maps. I only turn on location when navigating. GOS also surfaces app permissions in a more obvious and granular way so I tend to reject most permissions and wait to see if it breaks anything. I also try to use open source apps from F-Droid instead of the Google store. If I need an app on Google store, I use Aurora as my client so I can install apps anonymously.

There's a number of additional steps I take. Although it seems like a lot, I still feel like I'm not doing everything I could. What really matters though is that I'm always making progress over time.

The degoogle sub is a good resource, as is the !privacy@lemmy.ml comm.
