Dental rubber bands end up being better/longer lasting in my experience.
They are still around as "drop". massdrop.com redirects to their new site, but they aren't what they used to me IMO.
As a fan of Hifiman headphones... good luck. Their reputation is more or less the opposite of AKG and Beyerdynamic for this sort of thing. I baby my HE-6 because they are irreplaceable.
