Is that true? Were beans even present at the time and location of Pythagoras?

chickpeas and fava beans are native to the Mediterranean region I think

Partly. I never heard about the smell part. He planted them and observed that the bean stalk sprouting out of the bean resembled the way a human grows in the womb. That's why they thought the beans contain human souls.

Hmm, that even crazier actually.
