If you use Freetube, you haven't failed to notice that Google is on the war path again and broke it a few days ago. See this bug report.

Please note that it's been fixed in this PR. If you download the nightly build #5652, it now works like a champ.

Thanks team Freetube!

Why do freetube and new pipe break at different moments in time ? Iirc, it first started for new pipe, then for a little while with pipepipe, and it's freetubes turn.

Google clearly has the ability to break any and all third party client at any time.

My theory is that they're conducting random campaigns of working-but-not-all-the-time on this or that client at different times to grind everybody down and force them to comply through shear exhaustion. Because if they banned all 3rd party client outright, it would negatively impact the antitrust case against them.

Oh excellent, it works again!!

I did notice the livesreams have not been affected, only uploaded videos. I'm waiting for a public release with the fix.

So the current build on the site is 2.3.1? How long does it take for the public release?

Is the headline supposed to have an error message in the middle of it? Or did mine break somehow?

"Freetube [BAD_HTTP_STATUS: 403] Potential causes: IP block or streaming URL deciphering failed is fixed" is what my headline says.

Wow, code formatting in the title? Go Lemmy

Markup applies to titles in Lemmy. But be aware that titles are displayed raw above comments so don't go too crazy with it, so your titles display okay raw too 🙂

Would be awesome if Freetube could automatically check if the video exists on Odysee and play it from there if YT copy is unavailable or blocked.

Man it's been a long few days, glad they finally have a fix for it

If this happens again (which is very likely, I fear):

I've been downloading videos with

https://flathub.org/apps/org.nickvision.tubeconverter (yt-dlp gui)

and watching them with mpv. Still looking for a Tube-Archivist/Pinchflat stlye app that doesn't download the whole channel (or makes me paste single URLs) but has a nice Freetube-like interface for downloading and watching offline ...

Appreciate the info. Is there a nightly repo for Flatpak variant?

What's interesting is that if you go directly to an Invidious instance through your browser, everything works perfectly. At least, it did for me.

[–] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

All the invidious instances I've tried either don't work ~~or their API is disabled~~ - Sorry I didn't see "through your browser".

Not all invidious instances work. A lot of them have been hit by Youtube. But NewPipe still works - until it gets targeted too I guess. It's a game of cat and mouse with Google - and it's fucking tiring.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Still less tiring than having to deal with a bunch of ads/other bullshit that google pushes.

Personally, if I can't watch Youtube in third party clients - which happens regularly courtesy of Google - then I don't watch Youtube at all. The official clients are simply too painful - not to mention, a privacy-invading nightmare.

For sure, I use Libredirect on firefox to open all youtube links in freetube. There isn't anything worth watching on youtube where I have to be signed in to see. Not worth the privacy loss.
