I'd be totally fine with this, as a Californian if this didn't mean I had to pay taxes to support the red state leeches who will double lose now.

As stupid as they are, we're going to need to keep the country together somehow. If for no other reason than to not have them immigrate to states that aren't fucked up and become "welfare queens," in their own words.

In truth, though, we are stronger and economically better off when everyone is working together. And I'm confident a few swift kicks to the ribs and one to the head will once again have them voting for people that weren't dropped as babies. That is....if we get to keep our democracy.

Ya know, the intention is awesome but I would argue it would be best to just tarrif all US. This should push democrats to also fight for democracy.

Oh, it's going to be very universal pain. Most of the blue states are the trade hubs on the coasts, or the ones with the best research and medical programs, which have been crippled by massive cuts. Or all of the federal positions in those states fired or reduced. On top of all that, tourism is way down, or is projected to fall.

Before Trump, 90% of our state's wheat was consumed internationally (or nationally), and our exports, still below the covid waterline, were ~60 billion USD a year. That's rapidly changing, which will blow a huge hole in the state's budget. All because most people were too stupid to vote in battleground states where their votes were absolutely critical.

Our state has been progressive for many decades, if not longer, yet we will be just as punished as the screwups and betrayers. :)

I'm in a blue state and I agree with this.

We need the pain to be universal.

We've been sitting in this pot of water with the fire on for a long long time. The faster it boils, the better.

From red states? How? Why?

[–] aramova@infosec.pub 25 points 1 day ago

How? Some products are specific to red states, Kentucky Bourbon for example.

Why? /Gestures wildly at everything/

They are trump supporters. Targeting red states puts political pressure on him to stop the tariff war.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately this is probably going to backfire. Does red states have already had everything taken away from them. They're the worst in education, The worst in business, All the GOP needs to say is those foreign bastards are ... And those people will double down until their death. About half the red states are heading towards third world country territory and going there happily on the concept that the GOP might hurt someone else's bad as they hurt.

It's probably more to target his donors than the voters. Although with farmers, that is both. China found it quite effective last time he tried it.

It's not going to be hugely effective as you mentioned but likely still more effective than blanket in targeted tariffs.

Trump doesn't have a master plan. He's just a bully with power. It seems from his rhetoric pre election that he didn't even understand what tariffs actually are or how they work. The only way bullies stop is when they are stood up to.

Last time, there was a sense of waiting it out. Now that it's happening again it's more a sense that nobody wants to put up with his bullshit.

Canada is probably America's biggest ally and trading partner. He wants to annex them. It's ludicrous. He is big on nationalism to try and scare people. Well he's inspired nationalism worldwide to be unified against him.

If it was me, I'd be targeting Tesla and musk in particular as well.
