WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump offered a rosy assessment after the stock market dropped sharply Thursday over his tariffs, saying, “I think it’s going very well.”

“The markets are going to boom, the stock is going to boom, the country is going to boom,” he said when asked about the market as he left the White House to fly to one of his Florida golf clubs.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 1,600 points on Thursday as U.S. stocks led a worldwide selloff after the Republican president’s announcement of tariffs against much of the world ignited a shock like none seen since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Very well" = "according to plan"

[–] reiterationstation@lemm.ee 24 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

He hates America so his plans to destroy it are going very well.

[–] DNS@discuss.online 11 points 15 hours ago

Correction: US Republicans and Trump hate the USA. Do not pin it on one person as it takes a village. Fox News hates America, Joe Rogan rather be Russian than an American.

Don't let these fascists off the hook so easily.

I wonder if they'll realize Trump is doing to healthcare, diplomacy, the military, and social security what he's doing to the economy.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 17 points 18 hours ago

No for once he not lying. It's going great if you goal is to destroy America. He is doing Russia dirty work. He needs to be removed along with everyone in his circle.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 78 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Of course it's going well, the stock market drop was exactly what he was hoping for.

Have we forgotten that he has done this each month since he was Inaugurated?

Today the stock market crashrs on the tariff news. The wealthy will buy on this massive dip, and in a few days, HitlerPig will announce that the countries on his list have responded to his tariff threats, so he is postponing them for a month or so.

The stock market will recover a bit, and the wealthy will make a fortune. In a month, he'll do it all over again.

It's deliberate market manipulation.

[–] Initiateofthevoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Except that this 4D chess move is not going to make the wealthy a fortune. Dismantling the global economy will only hurt, everyone, in the long-term. Including billionaires' profits. Just the threat of tariffs is enough to do that damage. Whatever short-term gains anyone might make on a market dip are going to be completely washed out by the long-term losses of destabilizing international trade on a whim.

Even if it is "according to plan", it's a stupid fucking plan, and it won't work.

Those at the top have been conditioned to respond to quarterly earnings reports. They dont think much about long term strategy, other than to hoard as much money as possible to help them ride out whatever revolt might be coming.

And dont forget, most of them arent the smart ones that built those fortunes. Most are ignorant nepo-babies like HitlerPig, who paid or bullied their classmates to do their homwork, remained stupid, then inherited their family's fortune.

They were born on third base, and brag about hitting a triple.

[–] reiterationstation@lemm.ee 12 points 18 hours ago

I’m thinking the same but I also wouldn’t bet on it with him. However it is the same play right at the beginning of the month again. They are making so much money off of this.

“The markets are going ~~to~~ boom, the stock is going ~~to~~ boom, the country is going ~~to~~ boom,”

FTFY

You know when we recently had one of our leaders crash our economy with right-wing vibe economics in the UK, we kicked her out of the job pretty quickly and now consider her a laughing stock.

Precedent has already been set with what you do in this scenario—what's taking you guys so long?

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 31 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately US Constitution doesn't have easy way to kick him out. He won't be kicked without people rioting on the streets.

[–] graycube@lemmy.world 23 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Even then you'd need a majority of congress to be sympathetic to the rioters. Most of them are so isolated that chaos in the streets really wouldn't change their lives or opinions - except maybe to advocate for martial law and more deportations. We could try to vote them out in 2 years but that also seems unlikely unless a real opposition party emerges that actually gains traction.

Most of them are so isolated that chaos in the streets really wouldn’t change their lives or opinions

Emphasis mine. This has been said about every single ruling class ever. It has been proven wrong many times. The wealthy are afraid of the lower classes. Their lives depend on the status quo, and their lives change when the status quo changes. Otherwise they wouldn't press so goddamn hard on the boot.

There is a reason he set the 5th as the worst of his tariffs to hit. No trading. Monday morning is when the shit hits the fan.

[–] noride@lemm.ee 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Wtf, there are more coming??

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 12 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

These were just the ones that effect the auto industry and stuff like that. The really massive ones hit Saturday. Those are the ones that will destroy small businesses and farms.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 8 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Seriously?! The market is already shitting its pants. I didn't know there was a second wave of tariffs coming.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Can you handle the winning?!

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 30 points 22 hours ago

Worst stock market drop since... his first presidency.

The full quote, if anyone's interested:

I think it’s going very well. It was an operation, like when a patient gets operated on, and uh, it’s a big thing. I said this would exactly be the way it is. Uh, we have 6 or 7 trillion dollars coming into our country, and uh, we’ve never seen anything like it. Uh, the markets are gonna boom, the stocks’re gonna boom, the country’s gonna boom, and the rest of the world wants to see: Is there any way they can make a deal? They’ve taken away advantage of us for many many years. For many years, we’ve been at the wrong side of the ball, and I’ll tell you what: I think it’s gonna be unbelievable. The thing that people have to talk about - we’re up to almost 7 trillion dollars of investment coming into our country, and uh, you’ll see how it’s gonna turn out. Our country’s gonna boom.

Our country’s gonna boom.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 3 points 15 hours ago

and the rest of the world wants to see: Is there any way they can make a deal?

Naaaah, I’d rather just not deal with the USA at all

[–] NoForwardslashS@sopuli.xyz 12 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Time for some quick Trumpenomics:

Tarrifs on everyone - minimum 10% - >20% on top half of importers

+GDP of USA - $30 trillion

="Uh, we have 6 or 7 trillion dollars coming into our country, and uh,"

[–] Bonje@lemmy.world 16 points 23 hours ago

It's going very well for entities interested in the deterioration of aliances with United States and weaking its global economic power.

So yes, technically correct.

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
