“We hope there will be a bailout,”

I wonder where they think the money for a bailout is going to come from? The money "saved" by DOGE? Don't make me laugh. DOGE has cost the country more money than we could spend in 10 life times. Not to mention that killing USAID has also devastated farmers in this country.

It's going to be an interesting dinner show watching the Republicans fight each other to try to unwind the mess they've made by lining up behind the stupidest president this country has ever had. I just wish the Democrats weren't so incompetent as well.

We really need another option.

I don't have any experience in politics but I'll do it.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

If you have the time and resources then I hope you can.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Can't do that. That'd be socialism.

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 99 points 2 days ago (5 children)

That’s a big HELL NO from me. These are the same folks who likely voted for him; they need to reap what was sown.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 40 points 2 days ago

Farmers

Reap what they sow

Nice.

[–] Redfugee@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They will get helped, just watch. That is the point of all these blanket tariffs, hurt everyone and then make exceptions for their supporters and friends.

[–] Killer57@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I honestly don't think they will get help this time. JD Vance is invested in AcreTrader and what's a better way to buy thousand's of acres for pennies on the dollar than to bankrupt farmers?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Exceptions for anyone willing to owe the turnip. It’s all a shakedown game for personal allegiance, power accumulation, “ I’m winning”

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 9 points 2 days ago

they already did this with soybeans, they never recovered since china found other sources for thier soybean addiction.

[–] dumbluck@midwest.social 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm torn. On the one hand, you are right. It does seem to be a MAGA voter constant that they don't see the evil of their actions until the feel the consequences personally. On the other hand, we Americans all need to eat, and we now cannot painlessly import our food.

[–] uuldika@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago

hungry constituents will pressure their representatives to revoke the tariffs.

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That sounds great until you start having food shortages.

[–] Photuris@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Let’s fucking go.

They made this bed for all of us. Time to sleep in it. We’ve got rice ‘n beans. We can grow potatoes and raise chickens.

If they feel the pain, they may change their ways. If they’re kid-gloved away from the consequences of their own choices, they most certainly will not.

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We’ve got rice ‘n beans.

Out of curiosity have you ever tried to grow enough rice and beans to feed yourself? Since you're so confident maybe you should give it a try this year. I'm sure it'll be very gratifying to boast about how you grew most of the calories you ate in 2026.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

I think the concept is that the US produces significant amounts of rice and beans. Most of our corn goes to feed.

If we give up meat we could probably produce enough rice corn and beans to feed the US, but shortages and greed along the way will definitely drive the price up to unmanageable highs.

In southern climates it's not that hard to tend an acre garden, But it certainly not convenient or time efficient, and anybody who's not familiar is not going to be able to manage.

I've done hydroponic tomatoes and greens, I don't think I could feed a family of four out of my basement but I could definitely put a big dent in starvation.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

depends which states source thier food, tropical food comes from south of the border anyways, and from asia.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 25 points 2 days ago

Republicans: What do you mean they grow all our food? We can just import it. What do you mean it's $12 for a single tomato? This is all Biden's fault!

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 42 points 2 days ago

The true welfare queens.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 54 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wait, free government handouts? Well that sounds like socialism to me! Thank you Chairman Trump!

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago

Spoils system. You gotta kiss the ring, and have something to give Trump.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 60 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Then it'll be quite the disaster. A huge chunk of those that voted for Trump are from farm country. If they don't feel the full force of the repercussions that they helped cause, then they may not learn their lesson. No bailouts.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

they usually are the first to feel the effects tariffs.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 43 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Fuck these guys. Every Iowa Trump voter deserves to lose the farm and the house.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

alot of farmers did last time trump did this, some suicided, and others bought out by the corporate farms.

[–] Klear@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

And the rest of them kept voting Trump.

[–] balssh@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Grapes of wrath scenario all over again?

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago

Even more subsidizing?! Isn’t that the type of trade manipulation Trump is accusing other countries of?

[–] ctkatz@lemmy.ml 21 points 2 days ago (2 children)

so how are we going to pay for it? where are we going to get the money?

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] Auk@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Genius.

[–] belastend@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 days ago

Easy, we take all those stupid science grants and shove them up the farmers' asses

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Instead he will bail out Tesla.

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Offer Teslas at 50% off to the farmers! They get an EV at a bargain price, Tesla sales (and stock) booms. Or better yet the federal government just buys all the surplus Teslas and gives them away to farmers for free. Two problems solved with a single incentive, and it shows he cares about the environment after all!

[–] jimjam5@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

So apparently you can fuck around and skip finding out. But only if you kissed the ring.

How is giving farmers a bailout saving the government money? I thought this was about rooting out fraud waste and abuse and having extra money in the coffers?

These guys are just pissing away fucking money.

[–] softcat@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He'll toss them a few subsidies like last time and secure their vote for the third term.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

There won't be an election for the third term. He doesn't need any of us now.

[–] Omgboom@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Great now they're gonna turn the money printer on again

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Im sure that will help with the inflation

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

Sounds like a great opportunity for large multinationals to acquire agricultural land from the few remaining privately owned farms. Almost as if that is the intention…

Why bailout when tariffs caused the issue? Isn't food going to be wasted in the meantime? This is stupid. If they need assistance now, their state governments should be responsible for it.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

Welcome back to the spoils system, folks.
