swisscows.com is deffinetly worth checking out, as they not only do have a search engine, but also mail services and a messenger aswell as a vpn. And their name is kinda funny.

No, no, always say "google" as "search on the web", so that they lose the trademark.

I said ยซLemme Qwant this real quickยป a couple times as a joke and now people make fun of me.

That was a bad decision on my part

[โ€“] lazycog@feddit.uk 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ha! Look! It's the Qwantter! /s

Honestly "I'll qwant it" rolls off the tongue nicely compared to "let me duckduckgo it" or any other alternative.

[โ€“] Kyouki@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Been trying Qwant but missing many of the duck features :(

[โ€“] lazycog@feddit.uk 2 points 2 months ago

Added bonus to saying that: everyone ducks their head suddenly

I like it!

[โ€“] madjo@feddit.nl 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's better than "let me startpage this real quick"

[โ€“] Parptarf@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

ยซLet me DuckDuckGo til real quickยป

Hell, this one:

ยซLet me BING this real quickยป

[โ€“] lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 1 points 2 months ago

Just Duck it!

I'm bummed they removed it from their logo's hover text.

[โ€“] biofaust@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Qwant (at least the way I would pronounce it, let's say in a French way) doesn't sound bad at all.

[โ€“] dumblederp@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago

I pronounce it like an Aussie, been enjoying the site and it's results. These quants are allright.

[โ€“] P1nkman@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm a Kagier myself, but I don't say "I'm gonna kagi this". The word "search" still works, people understand it.

[โ€“] Parptarf@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

Whatโ€™s a ยซSearchยป?

[โ€“] gingernate@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

Steve ballmer made the same mistake

[โ€“] RejZoR@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 months ago

Let me Qwantatize the information

[โ€“] MicrowavedTea@infosec.pub 11 points 2 months ago

I'm confused, it says it's anonymous but doesn't let me search without an account?

[โ€“] cenariodantesco@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Tried to search a random topic: instant pop up asking to subscribe to pro....

[โ€“] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago

Let me ecosia that real quick!

[โ€“] dumnezero@piefed.social 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'd also point out Stract: https://stract.com/about

This project was previously funded through NGI0 Entrust, a fund established by NLnet with financial support from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet program. Learn more at the NLnet project page.

The languages dropdown on the search result has "US" listed as a language, but not English. Literally unusable.

[โ€“] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Ooh, and you can search the fediverse!

[โ€“] ctrl_alt_esc@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 months ago

They say they have their own index, but they also say they send every search request to bing..

[โ€“] ColdWater@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Swisscow want me to buy the premium plan or sign in to use it (no close button to be found), I just use Qwant instead

[โ€“] arch@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

Swisscows has actually been around for long but I donโ€™t think there have been much positive feedbackโ€ฆ

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (3 children)

So it's another bing front-end. Like ecosia. Aren't there any european indexes?

[โ€“] napoleonsdumbcousin@feddit.org 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Ecosia and Qwant are currently developing their own index in a joint venture.

https://www.eu-searchperspective.com/

I really wish they would build YACY integration so self-hosters can participate

[โ€“] CAVOK@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Happy to hear that. Not usable yet?

Not yet. The project was announced in November 2024. First results are expected in summer 2025.

[โ€“] chuso@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago

Mojeek is based in the UK and they use their own index: https://www.mojeek.com/about/why-mojeek

[โ€“] camilobotero 3 points 2 months ago

There is another project from the UK, that seems pretty promising: https://mwmbl.org/ https://alpha.mwmbl.org/ (a much nicer UI)

[โ€“] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

let me click on random links until the hand of god takes me where i need to be real quick

[โ€“] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Swiss cow?

We have a saying here, "Das geht auf keine Kuhhaut", "that doesn't fit on any cow hide", meaning, too much crazies/bullshit to fit even on a cow hide, let alone a pergament (hide of small game).

You can DuckDuckGoFuckYourself!

[โ€“] Mrkawfee@feddit.uk 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Stupid question but how can I download apps like swisscows without having to go on Play Store? I have an android phone

[โ€“] thanksforallthefish@literature.cafe 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

In addition to fdroid (your other reply) you can uae aurora as an anonymous front end to play store.

You'll need to download it off fdroid or the git page

[โ€“] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 months ago

If you really need an entire app instead of just using your browser, there's https://f-droid.org/packages/de.tobiasbielefeld.searchbar/

[โ€“] CreatingMachines@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

Let me Brave that ~~shit~~ real quick

[โ€“] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 1 points 2 months ago

I used to use Swisscows often. They usually give good results, moreso than other search sites. I only stopped using them because their site doesn't work without javascript, and I don't really use that anymore.
