“It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. ‘Harry Potter’ is not secretly being infused with anything,” Bloys concluded. “If you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”

I think that's the telling quote from the article.

He is basically saying that she has nothing to do with them, and that anyone objecting should just fuck off and leave HBO alone.

He's right, in one respect. Anyone that objects should leave them alone. By not watching the show, or any other shows they profit from. If HBO is an island that demands insulation from their business partners, then maybe, just maybe, don't dismiss the people you expect to pony up for subscriptions. If you want to be an island apart, don't expect shipping lanes to land on your shores.

Thing is, he also states in the article that they've done business with her for over twenty years. So they know her. They decided to give her more money, and have her as a producer on the show. That's not an island at all. That's a party in Prague, celebrating with her.

They can't have it both ways. If they want the potential profits from the show, then they have to accept that they're working with an asshole. Same as if they tried to launch a Cosby show, or get Weinstein to helm a series, or hire the KKK to do a dance revue for their Saturday night streaming lineup. You lie down with filth, your suit gets stained.

And it isn't about her right to her opinion, either. She actually does have a right to it, as does everyone. But, when you use your platform to spew hate, even if it's only at one group, even if that platform has good aspects, you're an asshole. And she has consistently not only spewed hate, she's used her fame to push that hate in ways that I sure couldn't if I shared her views.

So, the burden is on them. If that's who they want to work with, have at it. But don't pretend to have some moral high ground, or some immunity to criticism based on that choice. Only assholes try to do that. Maybe that's why he's willing to work with her, birds of a feather and such.

Well, you dorks could have just adapted Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising sequence.

They'll still give her millions of dollars though.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 19 points 10 hours ago

Doesn’t matter. She has publicly stated that she believes people who continue to engage with HP properties are implicitly supporting her transphobic beliefs. Making more HP content is included in that.

HBO can eat a bag of rusty nails. Rowling is a piece of shit, and they tacitly support her views by giving her even a single cent.

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

To avoid tariffs they will contain HBO's own anti-trans views, and JD is scheduled to cut the ribbon or his own tie.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 108 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Yah but was she paid for it? Or will she receive money for it?

Fuck that noise, may all her works and resulting ventures come up penniless and be forgotten

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 54 points 16 hours ago

yes, she's involved in the production and will definitely profit from it

[–] Steve@communick.news 9 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

How much money are anti-trans bigots supposed to have?

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 10 hours ago

They deserve nothing. They wish to rob us of our dignity. I say we rob them of theirs.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 32 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

If I'm being generous? Enough to provide themselves with food, clothes, and shelter, and that's about it.

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 9 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

That seems really generous.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 11 points 12 hours ago

Unlike them, I don't believe in killing people just because of their belief systems or who they are. That said, I think food/clothing/shelter should be the baseline that every person gets, so I want them at my idea of zero.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 64 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Won't include my viewership either.

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 1 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Come on, not even pirated?

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 14 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I'm ancient, so never got into it.

It's not quite the same thing, but I used to be a fan of Kevin Spacey, and can list at least five movies that he's in that I really like.

As it turns out, the excellence of his professional work is utterly replaceable; I haven't re watched any of his stuff, and backfilled any sense of loss with other content from other talented actors.

My advice would be to hold those memories fondly, but consider that chapter over. Moving forward, behave as though the author, and all her works died.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 5 points 10 hours ago

This guy gets it.

[–] RecallMadness@lemmy.nz 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Piracy numbers are used as a metric to benchmark a shows popularity.

Plus, if you use any p2p platform to get it, you’re distributing the work too.

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 2 points 5 hours ago

Piracy numbers are used as a metric to benchmark a shows popularity.

I am curious, how exactly? Because of Trakt? Because if that is one way then I am part of the metric 😁

[–] Zacpod@lemmy.world 65 points 16 hours ago

Unless HBO donates 100x that evil TERF's royalties to a pro-trans org then it's a hard pass for me.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 40 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

HBO Boss insists he wants your money and is willing to work with any shitty person to achieve it.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 1 points 12 hours ago

You honestly expect corpos to have better morals than TERFs?

Just don't make a show about a TERF's shitty franchise in the first place?

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 4 points 14 hours ago

Honestly I wouldn’t give a shit about this show even if Rowling wasn’t involved at all and wouldn’t see a dime.

I barely ever liked the property before we knew how deeply she sucks and I sure as fuck don’t care about it now.

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Oh yeah I'm sure, because media companies were so great at catching her insane Jewish caricatures. Watch the main villain's evil scheme include using polyjuice potions to change their gender, but since they aren't called out as explicitly trans it's "fine. "

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz -4 points 12 hours ago

Did you even read the books?
