Loosening restrictions around foreign ownership has been one of the most insidious and damaging legacies of the Harper governments.

Isn't it funny how they're the ones always complaining about fake news, but these are the ones that are spreading it.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 25 points 2 months ago

Every accusation is a confession with these fucks. And I do mean literally every single fucking one.

[–] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

Not so funny, not so ironic. It's purposeful, they aren't doing it accidentally.

All Post Media affiliated media are majority owned by American interests ..... the other owners are a European German conglomerate, another chunk is the American billionaire Leon Cooperman and about 1% is Canadian investors.

Anyone that reads that junk is literally reading international propaganda that is trying to influence our country.

Yup, this was floating around in Canadian subreddits

Always hate how in many areas SUN is pretty much seen as a competitor to the bigger newspaper publications despite them being two of the same going back to the newspaper box days.

Makes me miss Metro and the Star Metro after that.

I'm glad that the other daily in Winnipeg is Canadian owned and independent .

And is considered more trustworthy.

And has a bigger circulation.

I know in Edmonton, at least, the Sun and the Edmonton Journal had their newsrooms merged. They're framed as alternatives, but the Sun has taken over the 'mainstream' option in places.

[–] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Funny you mention that. I'm down in Calgary now, but I was specifically thinking of how Millbourne Mall and other places would have the two publications next to one another with the newspaper boxes.

Think I remember hearing about that merge a while back, though that could be deja vu or whatnot as well. Was more than a few years ago now no?

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yeah, it happened quite some time ago now. I think the newsroom merger happened with the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun, too, but I don't know for sure, so didn't mention it.

If you use search to find news, those sites will come up often.

Use a browser extension like "uBlacklist" and block them from even showing up in search.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago

Thanks for the recommendation!

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I contacted them about wanting them to stop delivering the Sun to our new to us house, they told me they only see a subscription for another one of their journals and stopped that one... We're still getting the Sun...

Well, you have will have lots of paper to train a puppy, or line a few bird cages

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

It's BBQ season and we use briquettes!

[–] JoeDyrt@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

So they want you have it anyway!

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Billionaire assholes recently realized they can just buy respected newspapers.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Nothing recent about it. They've never not been owned by billionaire arseholes.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 months ago

No. Stop that. In this specific decade, several major papers of record have been bought by assholes and jerked hard to the right.

[–] Ahrotahntee@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

Weird, I could have sworn Babcock was illiterate.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"you" im 100% sure i dont read any of these without even checking the list.

[–] SamuelRJankis@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

"You" might not but there millions of "you's" that do and they play a large part on who gets elected. This is quickly rising as being one of the most fundamental problems we have.

There's been zero systematic actions from any level of governments, platforms or even on most communities level like this one. None of those people even want to talk about this being a issue.

No, most media I consume does not have a maga bias.

Who would consume that crap?
