They also used to be harder to read.
Those boring subtitles we have nowadays are easier on my old eyes.
Memes related to anime. Animemes.

Ohh, there are still plenty of crappy subs out there. Just watched something last week with all white subs. And several scenes were white. We put borders around text for this very reason damn it. ๐
The real wild West is closed captions for dubs.
There was one I was watching and was pissing me off for... Re: Zero, I think? Terrible formatting, tons of obvious errors, seemed like an obvious AI abomination.
Then out of nowhere in one scene the captioner simply inserted "He Donkey" into the text while Subaru was being a moron and I have to admit, very accurate.
I only get the best fansubs ๐ค
Aggretsuko had subtitles like that when I was watching it on Netflix. A lot of backgrounds were white, too...
Nah, the yellow text with black outline was the gold standard. Literally. Very easy to read without the high contrast that is harsh on the eyes.
Wait... was this a trap to get me to date myself?
EDIT: Whoever decided to make this meme with white text and yellow outline deserves jail time.
damn bruh u old af
Not anime per say, but these are some yt channels that do have fun with their subtitles, while being quite legible:

New subbers that do fun formats are being cultivated in the vtubers clipping scene. With how busy it is to keep up with vtubers of their choosing though, I have little hope some of them will use their skills to sub anime though :(
I liked it sometimes matched the hair color
If I encounter subs with positioning, my brain generates far more happiness hormones than I ever should be allowed to have.
The neat thing anout piracy is that sometimes they still are
๐ซฃI guess, I am old nowโฆ
I hadn't seen peak today yet; thank you for that. Too bad it's nigh unreadable though lol.
We also used to watch anime on smaller resolution CRT's, so it was useful to have subtitles that stood out for that reason.
