Is it douchey to wear shades inside, even if you're only going to be in for a few minutes?

I never take sunglasses off inside, unless there's an actual reason (like not enough light, or if I need to see colors correctly when shopping). There's always too much light everywhere, it's always too bright, and it's even worst at night because of the contrast between the darkness and the blinding lampposts. So light sunglasses everywhere.

As a bonus, that way I never have to bother with eye contact. Couldn't care less if people think it's rude: if I took the sunglasses off I'd inevitably forget to make eye contact and they would think it was rude anyway. Fuck eye contact.

Indoor lighting with sunglasses on is too dim for my tastes. Alternatively, my shades might be too dark. I'll put them in my bag or on the brim of my hat, if one or the other are available.

[โ€“] Logh@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago

A few years ago, I went out and brought myself a nice pair of perscription sunglasses, trouble was I didnโ€™t have any spare cash to buy regular glasses. So, for about 2-3 years I had shades on everywhere I went, day or night. What I noticed is that if youโ€™re confident enough people donโ€™t really mind or act any different. Now that I have both, I easily keep the sunglasses on without noticing and there is no fuss usually unless I go into a bank or something.

I remove my hat and sunglasses because I was taught it is polite to do so.

[โ€“] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

"OMG that guy with his hat on is so fucking offensive"

[โ€“] Thebigguy@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 days ago

Hat I do sunglasses I donโ€™t depending on how much light hurts my eyes that day.

[โ€“] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Off. I'll likely need to switch to readers.

[โ€“] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

I just bought some cheap sunglass readers! $5 at Dollar Tree.

i keep em on because i have autism and eye contact is hard

[โ€“] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Holy shit. I never realized that this could actually bother people. I thought the jokes about it were based in the same place that jokes about popped collars are.

[โ€“] roserose56@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago

I just push them on over my head, and rare I hang them in my shirt.

[โ€“] Witchfire@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Depends on the sunglasses. Sometimes I'll put them up on my head, sometimes I keep them on. I use them to deal with light sensitivity so they're occasionally handy indoors.

I keep 2-3 shades on me of varying darkness at any time. Usually I'm wearing light rose-tinted ones.

[โ€“] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 week ago

Yes.

You let people see your eyes so you can talk and put them at ease. What are you, a cop in Alabama whose authoritah someone needs to respect?

[โ€“] Taco2112@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I haven prescription sunglasses. Generally I donโ€™t wear them inside, occasionally Iโ€™ll forget that I have them until after Iโ€™m in the store though. My eyesight without glasses is terrible so I leave them on. Sorry if I look like an asshole but I would have trouble navigating my way and finding what I need without them.

Depends how long I'm gonna be in there and how well I can see with them on. Well lit? In and out? They stay.

[โ€“] IttihadChe@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

On.

I'm blind as hell without my glasses and I never remember to bring my extra pair so if I'm wearing my sunglasses they stay on no matter what. If it was only going to be a few minutes I wouldn't swap even if I had my normal pair.

I never understood the "sunglasses indoors in douchey" thing anyway.

[โ€“] phantomwise@lemmy.ml 6 points 6 days ago

I don't get it either. If people wear sunglasses, whether inside or outside, they chose to wear them for a reason. Even if the reason is just "forgot to take them off". No one's deliberately wearing sunglasses to be rude to you...

[โ€“] scytale@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago

I take them off because I canโ€™t see shit.

[โ€“] rahm02@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I feel like itโ€™s fine. I donโ€™t know, I would maybe stare an extra second at the person wearing sunglasses. But really, who cares? Do what feels comfortable for you. At least here in the States, we are way past anachronistic rules like taking your sunglasses off indoors.

I just slide โ€˜em up on top of my head if itโ€™s like, more than 2 minutes but less than an hour, especially in the summer.

There are 2 types of people who wear sunglasses indoors: the blind, and assholes. - Larry David

[โ€“] VelvetStorm@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

I have photophobia, so I leave mine on. Though recently, I've started wearing blue blockers, and those also help with my light sensitivity.

[โ€“] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 1 week ago (4 children)

You should wear them at night so everyone knows how cool you are. For even extra cool points, you can smoke and do drugs.

[โ€“] phantomwise@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

I do because at night the street lights are way too bright... Yes people look at me weirdly ๐Ÿ˜‚

[โ€“] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

I wear it to cover my bloodshot eyes.

I think the stereotype is douchebag because people don't think about all the possible legit reasons. I wear them when I have a migraine, often even at home. You could also wear them because they're prescription and you forgot the other pair at home. Or you simply forgot you have them on in the first place. We shouldn't judge but people like to judge. And they mostly judge douchebag because maybe more people wear shades indoors as an effort to build a personality around their empty shell of a self.

I wear clipons, because I need prescription glasses, and having to swap from prescription glasses to prescription sunglasses back and forth multiple times a day is an ADHD recipe for losing an expensive pair of glasses.

I take my clipons off indoors though, but that's mostly because it's really hard to see indoors with them on :P

I have prescription sunglasses, and occasionally forget I'm wearing them. But I try not to wear them in a store.

[โ€“] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Barring any eye issues, I remove them always when speaking to people. I find it disrespectful to speak without making visible eye-contact.

I have see-through sunglasses, because they are specially made for my eyes. I canโ€™t take them off inside because then i cant see well. But thats exactly why i opted for see-through glasses, so people can still see my eyes. They arenโ€™t hidden :)

I believe that makes a difference to people, they just want to be able to see your eyes :)

[โ€“] Libra@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I dunno if you know this but everyone has see- through sunglasses... otherwise they'd be called sunwalls. ;)

[โ€“] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe they just wear the frames?

Whenever I see someone with sunglasses inside, I always chalk it up to a) not being arsed to remove them, b) light-sensitivity due to migraine/hangover, or c) being on some sort of drug (sunglasses = invisibility cloak/comfort blanket for some folks).

All of these are totally valid. Douchey is as douchey does, if folks are acting polite/keeping to themselves I don't judge.

[โ€“] MrAlternateTape@lemm.ee 6 points 1 week ago

Here 's one more. I wear glasses for my bad eyesight. I have sunglasses that have the same value of correction. Sometimes, in the summer, when I'm out and I don't think I'll go inside anywhere, I leave my normal glasses are home.

So then, when you stop unexpected for groceries, you look like a douchebag with your sun glasses on, but you can't really take them off because you don't see shit without them.

[โ€“] MonkeyTown@midwest.social 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I mean I used to wear sunglasses at work at my desk because everything in the office was just too damned bright. Same with a restaurant job for about 2 hours of sunset when the light streamed in the windows.

Who cares what people think? Protect your eyes and do whatever you like when entering a store. As long as you can see fine, it doesnโ€™t matter.

[โ€“] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Depends on how long I'm inside, how dark the store is and how much of a fuck I give on a given day. I do think that most people think it's rude/douchey/etc., but I'm not convinced that I should care about that kind of moralizing of etiquette (though I do care, to various degrees, what people think of me).

It's somewhat harder to see inside with sunglasses, but I, too, wear prescription glasses so it's a bit of a hassle to change to normal glasses.

[โ€“] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

Under 5 minutes it isnโ€™t

Especially if itโ€™s a small store/ gas station

[โ€“] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

On. But I have phototropic glasses ๐Ÿ˜

[โ€“] PurpleGameBoy@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I always take them off because I find it rude to keep them on.

I'll probably take my sunglasses off inside because it's going to be hard to see.

If the inside is as bright as the outside, then I might be inclined to keep them on.

Usually take mine off. Though there are times I forget I'm even wearing them.

[โ€“] BertramDitore@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

I have two of the same pair of glasses, one with normal clear prescription lenses, and the other with prescription lenses that are tinted brown and polarized. I often forget to switch them out because the sunglasses make everything look so damn good, but I carry them both with me and usually switch to my clear glasses if Iโ€™m indoors for more than a minute. But if I pop into a gas station or something for 30 seconds then Iโ€™m definitely not taking them off.
