">If [wife] leaves him he gets an instant hotter replacement"

As someone happily married, I am rather offended at how incredibly shallow this statement is. My wife is nothing short of an incredible human being, and someone assuming I would immediately get over losing her if someone "hotter" instantly replaced her is a horrible statement.

And you just know that there are people IRL who think like this.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 88 points 1 month ago

They're people who have no idea what an emotional attachment is, they've never had one. To them, women are for sex, decoration and menial labour.

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 month ago (1 children)

While I do agree with your sentiment, Truman's wife was a bitch.

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

True. It's been a while since I've seen the movie.

It is a 4chan post, don’t take it too seriously

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

Don't worry - sober me will have a chat with drunk me later about greentexts.

[–] breecher@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago

It is a 4chan post, so it is written by an incel.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's because this is written by somebody with the emotional maturity of a 6-year-old, the body of an overweight 40-year-old, and the age of a 16 year old.

What you're saying makes sense if you have a genuine connection with her

Truman's marriage was not genuine

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Of course.

Something to know though - I was very much not sober when I wrote that comment 😅

[–] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A friend of mine broke up with his girlfriend after almost 3 years. 2 weeks later after that, he already had a new 'love ❣️' saves on his phone. No idea how the fuck he does it, but onestly it made me angry.

[–] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

People are often over a relationship long before it's actually over, especially if one party is abusive or the relationship is toxic (with or without someone's fault).

I could've well been that friend, because nobody knew that I took my breaking up back and stayed in the relationship until my ex broke up with me because he was threatening suicide if I broke up with him.

[–] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You're right, there are complex cases, and often as externals we know nothing.

I was thinking more of the 'playboy' guy who keep changing girls because they get boring.

I mean, that’s the conflict of the movie. If everyone around you is always kissing your ass, you’ll never know you need to wash it. Sounds great on the surface but he wants to know he’s actually loved. Not just because it’s scripted to love him.

If everyone around me was being paid to like me all the time, I’d never be sure if I was a good person. No one would ever correct me or tell me I need to do better.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 54 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Moreover, it brings fundamental questions about your life and its long term safety. Why would someone trap you in such an unfathomably expensive setup? There is no reasonable answer, meaning some insane or horrifically unethical entity controls your existence. There is danger aplenty in your situation itself.

Dude saw the Truman Show and actually envied him. God that's cursed

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 38 points 1 month ago (1 children)

that is the state of the world we are in today.

[–] sad_detective_man@leminal.space 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Anon wants to be plugged back into the Matrix.

[–] needanke@feddit.org 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Was the Matrix not famously not a Utopia, because that ruined 'crop' yields.

[–] lightnegative@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah, if I remember correctly the first version of the matrix was a utopia and it failed because humans need something to fight / compete over in order to stay motivated

"The plot demands he can never struggle too much"

"Let's kill his dad when he's 12."

[–] pack@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

I enjoy shit talking the silent and boomer gens having it easier, but I know I'm wrong. They were raise by people who went thru the cvil war, ww1, and the great depression. There's a survivorship bias in who you have to hear from, there was the psychological trauma of the constant drum beat of the cold war, the civil rights movement, only being able to live one way. I know they also went thru it, but they are so outsized in their control of the economy and news now I'm just tired of viewing the whole world thru their ancient ass lens.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 42 points 1 month ago

I mean thats basically why it was the biggest show in the world in the movie.

Everyone idealizes what it must be like to be so pure and safe from decisions. Not realizing that curiosity and a desire to be free to choose who we are is more inherent to who we are than our exhaustion at complications of life.

So people watch, to pretend to be simple.

[–] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 39 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Anon is forgetting about the unskippable ads.

Because, anon, you’re seeing him from the outside looking in, and he couldn’t look out (until he broke free.)

You seem to assume that, knowing what you do, you’d have the same knowledge you do now when you’re in his position. You wouldn’t. You, just as he did, would have to discover the same discrepancies he did, and you (being him) would sail until you hit the wall.

Anon, do you by any chance find yourself agreeing with Cypher regarding pill choices?

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 31 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The secret ingredient is slavery.

Also, 100% guaranteed the producers of the show watched Truman fap.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago

You know, if all I had to do to live a guaranteed comfortable life was to rub one out in front of a camera every now and then, sure, sign me up.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

Omg I never thought about it. The Truman Show is literally legalized CSAM for the first 18 years.

Movie is now cursed, I can't ever think about that shit the same ever again.

[–] StrixUralensis@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 29 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

You have all the google (/other corp) services making your life easier, turning on the lights when you say so, syncing your files, emails across all you devices, hosting your videos, editing your family pictures for you etc... and all that for free.

But what did you sacrifice for all that, Truman ?

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

You left out what anon truly cares about, the assigned wife appliance.

Anon doesn't realize how distressing schizophrenia is. Not a moment's privacy

[–] red_bull_of_juarez@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Does he have sex with his "wife"? Are they legally married? There's a lot I'd like to know about Truman's world.

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 month ago

Does he have sex with his "wife"?

Yeah they mention how the broadcast goes to something else when they're having sex, and one of the subplots is that they're trying to have a baby.

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago

I haven't watch for a while, bit weren't they discussing having a child in the movie?

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

If you had the disposable income of a 90's middle-class person, you might find it claustrophobic that you aren't allowed to take your holidays and see the world.

But like for us who only really imagine seeing it through screens, this would be a massive improvement.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I feel like Truman, except its inversed. Everyone around me just trolling. Everyone is abusive. Everyone ignores me. I am the Anti-Truman.

[–] cute_noker 8 points 1 month ago

That because you are in the Truman 2.0 edition where they decided to which it up a little bit

Fake: Anon likes the internet too much to go back to the early 90's

Gay: Anon wants to be psychologically abused by another man for the rest of his life (CNC mascdom)

[–] JeSuisUnHombre@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Truman Show has the same message as The World's End

[–] MBech 10 points 1 month ago

Going back to your home town to get shitfaced is a bad idea?

[–] lime@feddit.nu 5 points 1 month ago

drink more water?

[–] moseschrute@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe our mistake is assuming it’s possible to build a utopia. Maybe every timeline ends is dystopia and the only way for that to not happen is to be satisfied with where we’re at today and halt “progress”

[–] lessthanluigi@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 month ago

Nah, I think the real mistake is that it takes a ton of effort for a utopia, when really doing less is the utopia
