Lefty Memes

5940 readers
942 users here now

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the "ML" influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, and discussion go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low-quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme)

0.5 [Provisional Rule] Use alt text or image descriptions to allow greater accessibility

(Please take a look at our wiki page for the guidelines on how to actually write alternative text!)

We require alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.

We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.

When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.

0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms

When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart

  • ofc => OFC
  • af = AF
  • ok => OK
  • lol => LOL
  • bc => BC
  • bs => BS
  • iirc => IIRC
  • cia => CIA
  • nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
  • usa => USA
  • prc => PRC
  • etc.

Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" seen on lemmygrad and more specifically GenZedong (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Mantic Minotaur" when answering question 2)

6. Don't irrationally idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

Hey, could you please provide alt text for this one? Should be pretty easy, please take a look under 0.5 in the sidebar; thanks Smiling bread

[–] hellfire103@lemmy.ca 2 points 12 hours ago (2 children)
[–] kuhli@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 hours ago

Only if they have their bat loicense

[–] Bennyboybumberchums@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago

Probably just bring a half broken bottle buckfast, and colourful rhyming language that always ends with "cunt"...

The treatment also comes in capsule form!

[–] cerement@slrpnk.net 20 points 1 day ago

“Well good news! It’s a suppository!”

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, that bat isn't going to cut it. Need to stock up on some AR15s.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

Think it's about time you americans stop the macho talk and fantasies, everyone knows you can't back it up.
If there's any positive in the fact that shitty country is drowning in guns then it would be the possibility to fight fascism.
But as always they talk the talk but never walk the walk. Weakest docile and pacified pussies on the planet.
Put on your cool tactical gear and invent some nice interpretative dance around your AR.
Or take it with you next time to vote harder.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Trump was elected. Why are you acting like he took over the country in a coup?

I fucking hate Trump but all these ignorant fucking non-Americans don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

[–] kuhli@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 4 hours ago

The vast majority of guns are owned by fascists, there simply aren't a meaningful number of armed leftists (or liberals).

If you're advocating for random leftists to start attacking random federal agents that's a terrible idea and will do nothing but provide an excuse for the regime to ramp up oppression.

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 0 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

No need to insult female genitalia by comparing it to Americans

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

It comes from the word pusillanimous, not vagina.

Thanks for the anti-American bigotry by the way, you're so enlightened.

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

99.999% of the people who use it insultingly mean vagina, so what the other 1 person thinks it means or where it came from is irrelevant.

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It takes time to organize resistance amongst a pacified and stupefied populace. Unless you are suggesting lone wolves start shooting randomly, only to be immediately captured or killed by the state, effectively ending their resistance?

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 0 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

It takes time to organize resistance amongst a pacified and stupefied populace

The second part of that sentence, is the reason for my statement, that it will not happen.
It didn't and time is not going to fix that.
Where is that organising or even credible groups that would do that?
They are basically going to cry online until 2028 and that's it.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 2 points 4 hours ago

Trying to unseat a democratically elected president is not going to have enough support. Now if he tried to serve a 3rd term you might see the idea of violence gain traction. If a Democrat president tried to serve a 3rd term there would definitely be some violence coming from the right as well.

But for now, most of the pacified masses are comfortably under the illusion that the government is still for the people. The price of everything is starting to cause doubt, but the wakening is very slow. In the US the real struggle is a class struggle, Dem vs Rep is mostly a distraction.

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 0 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

There are several leftist groups that have really ramped up their organizing. The PSL is explicitly building a Marxist vanguard party, the DSA has seen dramatic membership increases, and more.

A successful revolution doesn’t need a majority of the population to support it if the organization and strategy is there.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

None of those groups are leading a "successful revolution" lol.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

dramatic membership increases

That is a few 1000's.

There simply isn't enough left-wing.
And if they did try something the Blue MAGATS would rather fight them than the fascists.
I'm sure there are a lot more clueless people feeling 'radicalised' and think they're going hardcore by following Bernie the Sheepdog or AOC.

I feel sorry for the few percent worth saving but pragmatically I'm glad it came to this.
It's accelerating the inevitable decline of US power and the Blue MAGA get a taste of what they do to the rest of the world constantly.

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Well if you want to resign yourself to pessimism that’s your prerogative, but don’t kid yourself that you’re any different from the whining American leftists you’re complaining about.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

The method is flexible. But for some reason some kind of red flag is always there.

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Unfortunately it's not a cure. It's a treatment.

It's a chronic condition requiring continuous treatment. If you let up, it comes right back.

Keep up your meds people.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a strain of the authoritarian virus that has existed since 1914. It's not eternal and it can be removed without it coming back if you fight it strongly enough.

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

Unfortunately, it's more like cancer. It will spontaneously appear. Without continuous vigilance it will eventually get you.

The world needs to deal with the current acute outbreak, then work out preventative measures, for the long term.

[–] beemikeoak@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 day ago

Oh, yeah, trust me, you don't want to cure these bright individuals. But a good treatment probably feels soon good.

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

This is not the cure for fascism this is the last resort way of dealing with it.

Fascism is a byproduct of the capitalist system. When the inequality gets too great in society those at the bottom are looking for change and Fascism offers that for them.

It also captures and uses and abuses a lot of young people who are impressionable and want to do the right thing and make things better and they fall for the lies of fascists.

You combat fascism by bringing in good tax laws and social programs that makes sure the wealthy don't get preposterously rich while the poor get so poor that working a full time job is no longer enough to meet their basic needs and more.

You cure fascism by getting rid of the hierarchical social structure that is capitalism that the fascist hierarchical system maps on to very well and create a more equal society that's where it's much harder if not impossible for fascists to take power.

For me this is the quintessential video essay on fascism (white fascism) https://youtu.be/5Luu1Beb8ng

Is a cure

But, ounce of prevention and all that.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

It's been my whole life so far and things take three steps back for every half step forward. I'm ready for guillotines. I don't want to waste my whole life voting for the lesser evil and praying for gradual reform but getting the greater evil anyway. My seemingly incurable social ineptitude and speaking skills haven't helped any attempts to take direct action while taking the moral high ground. There are more people wanting to undermine the optimal system for meaningless hate and personal gain every day and if I'm going to die and hope the next generation has it better I want to take everyone undeserving that would greedily ruin things for everyone else with me.

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I guess arguably, there are not many truly fascist cunts and those ones deserve the bat, but the current societal structure and systems in place allows for a predictable rise of fascism, by people who believe the lies fed to them, who want a better life for themselves and for their children and thus become a enablers/silent bystanders as fascism rises.

[–] MTK@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I would say that while in the US this is very accurate, it is important to understand that it is not inherently a capitalism problem, but rather an abuse of human nature and hard times by those who have something to gain (ideals, money, power, joy, etc)

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

Why would this only be accurate in the US? The nazis gained power after the economic collapse of 29 combined with the ww1 reparations destroying the German economy.

Now we are post 2 financial crises in 2008 and covid and AfD is on the rise in germany, Macron almost lost to he fascist party.

The Brothers of Italy had massive increase in recent elections.

Modi, Bolsonaro, who ever the fuck clown is they elected in Argentina.

Far-right populism is on the rise world wide as the economic struggles continue.

[–] MTK@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You have to be careful, if you smack hard but not hard enough it can actually make new fascists!

[–] hellfire103@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

A side-effect of some antidepressants is depression. It happens.

[–] clockworkrat@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

What? Even more brain damage?

[–] hellfire103@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh. I was gonna say, but i suppose local folk remedies with some scientific basis should be considered.

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think xtc can be a cure. I've seen people shift from right to left because of it. Power of serotonin!

[–] Longmactoppedup@aussie.zone 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It wears off though. During 2020, I noticed a few acquaintances I knew from raving back in the day fell right down the rightwing misinformation hole.

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Oh but that's not an issue. We The Netherlands produce enough xtc for everyone!

Edit: only world leaders need to take xtc when making decisions. That's already going to make a huge difference.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 1 points 1 day ago

Gas stations are also very effective
