1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Why are shitposts in Spanish funnier than English

    [–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean same for shitposts in German. Just funnier when it's a language you sorta understand, but not completely.

    [–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I always laugh at German memes. I have absolutely no idea what they are. When I see them i imagine a German person crafting a meme which is just a statement of fact and laughing to themself.

    [–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago

Luckily ich kann ein bisschen Deutsch sprechen y hablo un poco Español, but it's only a little in case of the former and even less for the latter. So I'm nearly quadrilingual, but really just bilingual lol

I do get the terms front/rear left/right just from vl, vr, hl, hr though, which is mildly amusing because that comes from owning and fixing formerly luxurious German shitboxes, not the 7 years of German class I had in school.

We know it bro, we have it all over our feeds, involuntarily

    [–] josefo@leminal.space 6 points 2 days ago

I'm native spanish speaker, it's portuguese for me the language that really elevates memes for some reason.

    [–] Colloidal@programming.dev 10 points 2 days ago

It adds a layer of incongruity.

Wait since when is this community Spanish?

    [–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 53 points 2 days ago (1 children)

    Rough translation:

Linux Mint: thanks to Steam and Proton I can run Windows games with more FPS. Gabe Newell, you are blessed!

Windows: the Microsoft telemetry ate the RAM, I can’t give so much FPS

    [–] teft@piefed.social 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I would translate the sentences the same except I would change the ends of those two sentences to say: "Bless you, Gabe Newell" and "I can't give as many fps".

    [–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Thanks, ‘bendito seas’ was a new one to me and I was having to do some guesswork!

    [–] teft@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

Yeah, the subjunctive can be more than a little confusing for us english speakers. Wishes, desires, and doubts use that conjugation. In this case op is wishing blessings on Gaben so we have to use the subjunctive.

It is not, this post breaks rule 5.

    [–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 62 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

No this post does NOT break rule 5:

    1. 🇬🇧 Language/язык/Sprache
Comments written in other languages are allowed.
The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.

I speak absolutely zero Spanish, yet I understand the post text about 80%, enough to get the gist of it.
That Linux runs Grand Theft Auto faster with Proton on Steam than on native Windows 11.

Yeah, I only speak some rough Spanglish due to being raised near the border, and I can understand the gist of this meme through context alone.

    [–] alecsargent@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (9 children)

Well it is true one can deduce the gist of it, but not the exact message. So I guess the rule has to be clearer on this.

    [–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Seems to me in this case, the people have voted.
Currently 98 upvotes and 15 downvotes for the post.

Not really, I'm sure someone who "only speaks English" can get the gist of it.

    [–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

I don't speak Spanish and I understood everything.

    [–] hedgehog@ttrpg.network 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Not sure why you’ve gotten downvoted for that, as it’s part of the referenced rule and also true. Unless you’re someone who sees a word in a foreign language and has their brain turn off in response, this should be intelligible to someone who understands English and who doesn’t understand Spanish.

It helps that more than half the words are in English / are used by English speakers: Steam, Proton, Grand Theft Auto 5, Gabe Newell, Linux Mint, Microsoft, Windows, RAM, 100 FPS, 75 FPS

And the important Spanish words are easy to understand:

“Gracias” is pretty commonly understood even by bon-Spanish speakers.

“Uso Software Libre” is pretty obvious, since Libre is a term used in FOSS communities. “Uso” is the most complicated part and I suspect if I didn’t know Spanish I’d just think it meant “Use,” and “Use Libre Software!” is close enough to the intended meaning

Unless Telemetria doesn’t mean Telemetry, it’s pretty obvious.

If I blanked out all the other Spanish words I think the effect would be pretty much the same.

gog games run faster than steam versions too if you wanna go even extra.

I already transitioned my laptop to Linux mint snd I got no regrets. My VPN isnt installing on it, but i can manage it later.

This weekend....desktop time. I spent a lot of time making backups and making sure everything is in order. I'll report on this very thread when I have done it.

if it's a corporate one for work, i'd like to point to this: https://github.com/yuezk/GlobalProtect-openconnect

i'm not the developer and have no connection to it other than a user but when i switched i discovered the vpn i use for work didn't have a linux client readily available but this one worked flawlessly.

    Is GTA V really faster?

I keep Windows around mostly because certain games (like Rimworld/Stellaris and such sims, and CP2077) run faster on Windows... not that I like that one bit.

I'm not running a slow linux distro either. It's CachyOS, git proton, scx_cosmos scheduler (at the moment, though I have tried some others).

But I suspect the fundamental issue is I'm on Nvidia. Another might be that I strip Windows down to the bone (even gutting Defender) because I don't use it for much else, and that does help some games significantly.

    Buenísimo el Linux sabor Menta

    [–] RedPandaRaider@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Wait it actually runs that much better on Linux? Is that because of missing DRM or something?

    [–] Daefsdeda@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

IIRC less bloat on linux mostly

    [–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Bloat has a minimal impact on performance unless your system is seriously starved for resources.

It's largely the magic of Proton, and everything that goes into Proton. DXVK runs on windows too and that alone can get you double digit performance improvements on the right games.

    [–] 42Firehawk@lemmynsfw.com 8 points 2 days ago

To add to this - for borderlands 2, which is not an "ideal" title at all speedrunners across the board use dxvk while about half of the rest of players use it because not only does it about double fps, it also stops a memory leak, fixes random crash bugs, and cuts down loading times.

Dxvk is just amazing where it works properly.

Not really, it's just how much better Vulkan is compared to DX12. It's mostly about having a way better async scheduler for multi-CPU multi-threading hardware.

    [–] Ofiuco@piefed.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Depends on your hardware and luck. I use fedora and the Mumble server, xlink kai and ZeroTier just won't work for whatever reason. tModloader sort of works but my pc struggles with it, DRG crashes constantly, both games are marked as "works out of the box". Also there isn't any music player with a UI like MusicBee (some are close but not enough) and I use that a lot.

So I'm stuck with Windows until I get the money to upgrade... Now ain't that ironic?
