While normally such a government shutdown is disastrous, with all the crazy ICE stuff and all the cuts to mandatory services it now it seems like the best course of action and I hope the democrats keep it up (fat chance of that)

I fully expect the spinless Democratic leadership to bail the fascist Republicans out yet again.

They already fucked up by even offering a compromised solution in my opinion. Why keep giving these incompetent fascist slack when they clearly want to Mike Pence themselves.

Does congress still get paid during a shutdown?

I genuinely don't know the answer to that question, but if the answer is "no," then I think we've uncovered a significant clue. Personally I feel like a huge part of the top Democrats' horrifying fecklessness on all of these type of issues is that, at the end of the day, they'll be fine, and you can sometime divine their priorities by seeing what does make them start sweating and working hard to avoid.

Lol, of course they still get paid!

[–] PhilipTheBucket@piefed.social 10 points 1 week ago

More or less as soon as I typed it I realized, you know what, that's a stupid question, I would be very very surprised if they don't get paid.

I still feel like the fact that it impacts their workplace directly, is the reason they freak the fuck out about it and start actually trying, in a way they usually don't when someone else is getting kidnapped to an ICE facility or losing their workplace or home or family or life.

Lisa Murkowski is very concerned.

I'm interested to hear what Susan Collins has to say.

Surely Jill Stein is stepping up to save us!

[–] candyman337@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Agreed, a shutdown is necessary and the logical next step for a real opposition party.

[–] lettruthout@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Good point. If the National Guard no longer gets paid, how long will they continue to invade our cities?

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

I'm concerned that ICE would continue doing their shit simply for the love of the game.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 73 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Shut it down.

Shut it all down.

General strike until every Republican resigns and gerrymandering is criminalized nationwide.

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 17 points 1 week ago

You know I LOVE this idea. Fuck Dems pushing for the healthcare subsidies; go for the Federal gerrymandering ban instead - do A LOT more good!

What kind of a dysfunctional, mismanaged country has to struggle every single year to avoid its entire government shutting down, and sometimes fails to do so? Are any other countries like this?

Not just every single year, but every three to six months.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 26 points 1 week ago

Well, it doesn't help that a big faction of one of the two major parties, the republicans, fundamentally doesn't believe in government or democracy. They do not want a government that provides services to the public.

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 week ago

It's only when Republicans control the House and Democrats control the Whitehouse.

At least, it was. Now the Republicans can't even help but sabotage themselves.

The Belgians sometimes do weird shit like this, but not at the same frequency.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If the government shuts down we should also not have to pay taxes

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Well, shut the fuck down, then.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

The Fascist enabling Neoliberals will fall in line and aupport their Republican friends at the last minute, granting all of their wishes while saying their hands were tied.

They have done this every single budget vote in my life

I would love for it to be different this time
