Jimmy Kimmel will return to air on Tuesday after his show was suspended following comments he made about the death of Charlie Kirk, Disney has said in a statement released in the last few moments.

"Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country," the statement says.

"It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday."

Jimmy better quit after his contract is done

[–] Samsy@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

You think a contract with Disney will be ready at some point?

*over Trump comments. He actually didn't say anything about Charlie Kirk

They better not have made him donate

Afaik, even tho abc is resuming production Sinclair broadcasting, who actually owns a bunch of abc affiliate stations, is refusing to pick up the show unless Kimmel donates to toilet paper usa. So as long as it stays off Sinclair, he probably wasn't forced by the higher-ups to donate

Sinclair about to hurt their own company?

Anyone else thinking Disney did this whole dance to distract from their Disney+ subscription price increase next month?

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just food for thought- if every news story is a distraction from something else, what is ultimately newsworthy? This comment or some form appears on just about every Lemmy post relating to the news and I really just don't get it. Sometimes news is just news. Different people think different things are noteworthy and want to read about them

The lesson on the attention economy that we are getting from Trump is that each "distraction" doesn't necessarily have to be meaningless, but rather that each lessens the impact of all the others. Perhaps "distraction" wasn't quite the right word in my previous comment, but instead I guess I mean, "Does anyone else think Disney created and 'solved' this problem with Kimmel as a means of making it so that when the price drop is getting more discussed over the next couple months, attention paid to that will be somewhat clouded by this event?"

I'm aware there are also flaws to the strategy. If any company manufacturers one error to make another potentially less problematic, they still have to suffer the fallout from the first one. The net result can easily be worse than if just the second happened in isolation. The president gets to live in a world where he is extremely difficult to fire/cancel/get rid of for the next 3+ years, and so many of the fires he sets are meant to achieve some end of their own, however petty they may be.
