Not that any of you insensitive villeins ASKED, but it's the goedendag for me

[–] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Who you calling villein, you vagabond?

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 6 points 1 month ago

I thumb my nose at thee, varlet!

Can't a man love going clubbing on its own merits?

(and maybe its association with Flemish militiamen bludgeoning French nobility)

[–] GeriatricGambino@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I mean, yeah, a man absolutely can.

And gotta know the tools of the trade if you ever need to repel fresh hordes of french nobles coming to your neighbourhood to gentrify the housing market. They probably inbreded themselves nearly out of existence but you can never be too careful

I SAID GOOD DAY metal pipe sound effect

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

I got mine at a Viking festival, and it was made by a guy who was on Forged in Fire. We bring it out at parties and smash blocks of ice and everyone has a great time. It also works marvelously on coconuts, but it turns out that coconut does not compost very quickly when spread out all over the backyard.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Flanged mace all the way. The armor penetration of a blunt weapon combined with really nasty serrated/rusted edges. Your weapon doesn't really degrade with use, unlike bladed weapons getting dull or rolled edges.

This chart is missing the "goedendag" though. A critical oversight ;)

[–] GeriatricGambino@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Yeah, out of all of these, it looks the most like it's made by a craftsman who gave real thought about form and function. Whatever side you're holding it is the right side. Just grip it and clobber away, it will dent whatever has the misfortune to be on its path. The thick edges are durable, and pointy because sharp wasn't enough so double fuck you for getting hit with this. It looks heavy but light enough to be swung quickly.

Also if we set aside the horrific wounds it was meant to inflict on people, there's a sense of harmony about those lines and it's not unpleasant to look at.

I always liked the quarterstaff. Something about it being just a long stick is appealing to me. I guess I just have that dog in me lol

[–] grue@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

I'm also somewhat partial to it, mainly because I learned a little bō in karate class as a kid. It also appeals to me as a thing that's not purpose-built as a weapon and is thus a bit more sneaky.

[–] maltasoron@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 month ago

Give me one that's properly usable at half staff and then we're talking

Why hold it in the middle if you can hold it at the end

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Flail. Just absolutely badass.

[–] DandomRude@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Indeed, also practical, even when it comes to threshing grain....

[–] JetpackJackson@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

A tool for crushing your fingers in spikes like a crab shell opener/cracker

[–] jellyfishhunter@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I like Bec de Corbin. So versatile. And the beak end is so stylish.

[–] witty_username@feddit.nl 6 points 1 month ago

Molag Bal has entered the chat

[–] oddlyqueer@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

You know I always say "flanged mace" but what do I end up using 99% of the time? Cudgel ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] dsilverz@calckey.world 5 points 1 month ago

@PugJesus@piefed.social

My favorite medieval weapon is none of these. It is the grand old fire, fire beats all of 'em. Plus, I see a potential for cudgel to become a fire torch.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Don't get me wrong, love a flail

But why does the meteor hammer never get love

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago

I was always a fan of flails, meteor hammers, slungshots, kusari-fundo.. all the other variations of it

Something about a rock on a rope feels cool :3 it's like a mix of simple but allowing for flashy tricks

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Rock is good, but Stick is superior.

[–] Rose_Thorne@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

People underestimate the spiked club. Sure, it's not fancy, it doesn't have great reach, some might even say it's more primitive, but you can pump out a ton of them fairly cheaply and it's about as intuitive as a spear.

One spiked club might not be scary, but what about a thousand?

Barbarians not giving due honour to the humble tile.

I've always been a fan of the Kanabo.

Ahh, the Braveheart armory 👌

I think every one of those gets used in the movie. I know for sure he pops a helmeted skull like an egg with the ravens beak 🤪

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago

But they are all so pretty!

Except the flail. might as well kill yourself in a less painfull way.

If i had to pick i it would be the flanged mace for everyday slaying, and the Rabenschnabel (bec de corbin) for fancy dress days.

[–] tatann@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Ogryn approves

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 3 points 1 month ago

Good old rock, nothing beats that!

[–] Gigdragon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Flanged mace. Always the key to me having a good time and fascists having a less than ideal last meal.

[–] recklessengagement@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Morningstar or flailed mace

[–] Junkers_Klunker 2 points 1 month ago

Boulder go bonk on enemy head.

Given only three of those are blunt and one is a rock have you ever considered they stopped asking because you are stupid?

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Given only three of those are blunt and one is a rock have you ever considered they stopped asking because you are stupid?

Cudgel, mace, flanged mace, maul, warhammer, quarterstaff, and bec de corbin are all pretty undeniably blunt.

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Crudgel: yes.

Flanged mace: has flange.

maul: usually is this one has spike's.

Warhammer: blunt on one end but not entirely blunt.

Quarter staff: Yes.

Bec de Corbin: 1/3 blunt not entirely blunt.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A flange is blunt. It's the same concept as the narrowed point of contact of a warhammer.

The maul's protrusions are not the primary purpose of the maul.

That the mere potential for non-blunt attacks renders a weapon non-blunt would also render swords and spears not-sharp by the reversal of that principle.

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Counter point you're splitting hair's you couldn't do that with a bunt weapon Check Mate.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

or use catapults, archers, ballista, crossbowers at a range to deal with these melee weapons.

[–] Pillow_Fort_Guard@piefed.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I do like how the bec de corbin gives you plenty of options, depending on the situation/how you’re feeling

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

If you shove the bec de corbin 🗡️ into the huge 🪨, you'll have some props for the retelling of king Arthur's childhood hero arc.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

You like XYZ but have it coined a word for brutally beat someone? I think not.
