It's interesting to see how propagandized the story is, according to the penguin & pufferfish. (I forget if they even have names) Apparently, they were apathetic cannibals who only left their bunker so they could eat more people and fuck up the world.

My best guess of the actual situation would be the mata inheritors were narcissistic and thought they would be the saviors of the destroyed world, quietly steamrolling all of the other survivors in their attempt to 'rebuild civilization' and essentially colonize the apocalypse.

Penguin & pufferfish, likely being descendants of the unmata survivors, inherited the original survivors' perspective on the events.
