Iguanodon. Also known as the Bro-asaurus.
I have a soft spot for two dinos because of videogames:
-
Giganotosaurus: Because Dino Crisis 2. I mean, I know that its size was greatly exaggerated, but I'll never forget how damn frightening it was when you were about to fight the T. rex and suddenly, bam!, a fucking thing twice it's size appeared and kicked its ass like it was nothing.
-
Utahraptor. Many years ago, there was a little game called "Primal Prey", where you could go back in time and hunt for dinos. I thought (again) that the T. rex would be the most frightening, but when I got to the part where you have to hunt for the Utahraptor, oh boy, I almost pissed myself because this dude appeared behind me out of nowhere and killed me in an instant. Since then I've really liked this species.
Technically not a dinosaur but a Pterosaur, but still, Quetzalcoatlus https://dino.fandom.com/wiki/Quetzalcoatlus.
Would make my morning commute way more fun.
When I was a kid I really liked allosaurus. Everyone knew and liked tyrannosaurus, which made him too mainstream. I also had a book with really cool visualisation of allosaurus which helped me to prefer this bad mf.
Pachycephalosaurus the thick headed one
I bet these things probably had some really cool brain protection similar to how today's woodpeckers do.
The head knocking matches those things must have had within their species would have been insane! Like goats, only like, a hundred goats per goat.
Edit: Apparently, they were not that big, so maybe only like two handfuls of goats. Which is still a lot of goats.
Could I interest you in a Micropachycephalosaurus? It's like a Pachycephalosaurus, but fun sized!
I always appreciate a smaller sized version of my favorites
Camarasaurus, because I found a tooth of one while volunteering on a dig site
I wonder what it tastes like.
how big was it? (the tooth)
Camarasaurus has large teeth for a Sauropod. They are like little shovels. This one was worn down quite a bit, so the Paelo on site said it was likely an older adult:
You can see a skull of one here for reference:
That is truly AWESOME!
Thank you for sharing
It was very exciting. I'm hoping to do more volunteering of that sort again.
Triceratops. The only thing wrong with rhinos are that they have too few horns and not enough armor plating.
There was a monoceratops. Hell, there were ceratopsians who didn't have horns at all.
Sauropods because BIG
But really, I mean look at those things!! They traveled together in herds and the size of them meant that as they walked, the strata of the earth was fucking shuffled. How cool is that?????
Therazinosaurus. What even is this thing? Look at this big pokey boi:
What if those giant claws were webbed and it was actually some kind of weird prehistoric duck waddling around everywhere.
Tickle chicken!! This guy is my favorite second only to true dilophosaur which was much larger than the Jurassic park depiction and probably didn't have the frill or acid spit because it was the largest predator in it's area.
I like the triceratops. Having three pointy bits makes it 50% more awesome than rhinos.
Quetzalcoatlus. Technically it isn't a dinosaur but that makes it - and me accordingly - even more special.
Same. Giraffe-sized flying nightmare with the wingspan of a Cessna that can swallow you whole. Hell yeah.
I have a few.
By far the frontrunner is Parasaurolophus. Hadrosaurs are cool, Lambeosaurid Hadrosaurs are cooler. Not to besmirch my boy Edmontosaurus tho. The biggest Hadrosaur is also on my list.
I am also a big fan of the Borealopelta. This is a Nodosaurid Ankylosaur, meaning it has shoulder spikes instead of a tail club. I like this guy because of the story of its discovery, as well as the fantastic display at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Also helps that it's the most intact armored dino ever found.
Finally there is the Regaliceratops. Like a Triceratops, but with a super fun crown!
There any love here for Icthyosaurus?
Just looks like a big derpy lemony shaped dolphin, with a snoot that 76% more boopable.
Troodon. Little dudes that were thought to be smart, formed communities, had weird teeth, and have been the cause of multiple controversies over classification or existing at all. So, tiny trouble makers.
Spinosaurus.
Because it stymies paleontologists seemingly every time one of them tries to figure it out.
Hell yeah, Ankylosaurus! That little doom wagon has been my favorite since I was a little kid!
Really surprised to see that he inspired the post to begin with, as most people don't know what it is!
Ankies rock! Check out this mummified then petrified Nodosaur (a type of Ankylosaur)
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/mummified-armored-dinosaur-makes-its-debut-1-180963311/
It is so INSANE they found this. Just the astronomical odds of everything coming together like that...
Agreed. It's mind blowing
Heck yeah! Borealopelta in the house!!!! Have you seen this in person? I was thoroughly intimidated! It was like looking at a dragon or something. So cool!
I have not been up to Alberta yet. I've been wanting to take my son
The Tyrrell has some fantastic displays! Their Tyrannosaur section really makes you empathize with the Jurassic Park lawyer. Black Beauty is particularly magnificent. I highly recommend the town of Drumheller as well. Lots of wacky dino statues around town. They lean heavily into the motif.
