The detention by immigration authorities of a Chicago man whose 16-year-old daughter is undergoing treatment for advanced cancer is illegal, and he must be given a bond hearing by Oct. 31, a federal judge has ruled.

Attorneys for Ruben Torres Maldonado, 40, who was detained Oct. 18, have petitioned for his release as his deportation case goes through the system. While U.S. District Judge Jeremy Daniel said in an order Friday that Torres’ detention is illegal and violates his due process rights, he also said he could not order his immediate release.

“While sympathetic to the plight the petitioner’s daughter faces due to her health concerns, the court must act within the constraints of the relevant statutes, rules, and precedents,” the judge wrote Friday.

Torres’ attorney took the ruling as a win — for now.

Nearly 100% of this bullshit run by the rogue regime is illegal. They don't fucking care and no ones going to do any thing about it for us. There needs to be a general strike at the minimum ASAP.

I had no hope of a general strike, but if Democrats continue to hold out on the budget then it might happen as families run out of food, government employees get evicted, and more and more MAGA become disillusioned.

So now I have a little hope, but still very little. It seems to me that the fascists want a general strike so they feel more justified in a military crackdown. Things are still going to get worse before they get better.

It feels more and more like an enivitability, but these fascists are bigger cowards than they appear. With free and fair elections on the chopping block, what other options do we have than to flex the biggest muscle of our democratic rights?

And the consequences for violating the law and committing a crime are...?

... Nothing, they're just declaring it illegal. Enforcement is only for the poor in the US now, the mask has just gone completely off.

Enforcement is only for the poor in the US now

I'm sorry to say its often like that here in the Nordics as well. And you don't even get to sue for compensation or shit.

The cops illegally prevented me filming them searching my home illegally, the Supreme Court of Finland sided with me and I learned that from reading the news, no-one even sent me a letter or anything.

And that's the only thing I actually had proof of, seeing as they literally grabbed my phone.

Let's not be complacent about any of our systems, mkay, because this new wave of fascism is a doozy.

so his detention is illegal and violates his due process rights but...you can't order his release?

So the court has to act within whatever but ICE simply doesn't have to? the fuck is going on down there?
