For Mitch, the key issues facing NYC right now are “safety, the trains being safe, and affordability”, adding that while he’s skeptical about whether Mamdani can deliver on all his promises, he’s open-minded. “I don’t know who’s going to pay for all this stuff he wants done … but I’m going in open-minded, and just hoping somebody is offering some alternatives.”

Brooklyn, 30, also from Astoria, said their top priorities were protecting LGBTQ rights and tackling the city’s affordability crisis. “I think Mamdani is doing a great job of addressing everything I’m concerned about,” they said.

Nicole, 30, echoed that sentiment, praising Mamdani’s authenticity: “I feel like Mamdani is very genuine in his responses in a way that isn’t typically seen in most politicians. He’s a little less lip service-y than usual.”

Was wondering why Bernie and AOC weren't doing this already.

We need progressives actually pushing progressive policy and canidates, not just rounding up progressives and then telling them to vote for the next milquetoast Neoliberal.

This was the idea behind Justice Democrats, but then came the gatekeeping and the back room deals with Pelosi. It never quite panned out. AOC has never fully committed, but this is a promising development on the heels of the defeat oligarchy tour with Bernie.

I highly recommend watching these speeches, at least AOC’s , it was the best speech I’ve ever seen her give, truly inspirational. Bernie’s was his usual and Mamdani was good, but AOC was pure fire.

Her delivery was over the top especially at the points where her voice was screeching.

Bernie's speech was pragmatic in making sure people understand the context of this election and to warn everyone not to take the momentum for granted.

Mamdani's speech had some good humor thrown in but I think his closing could have been stronger.

They should’ve been doing it for a few decades instead of just starting now

What do you even mean by that? Mamdani has been in politics for 4 years. Ocasio-Cortez for 6. And Bernie literally has been doing it for fucking decades.

There's a huge push from a selected group of Lemmy accounts to claim that Bernie, AOC, and Mamdani are fake leftists and very very bad and we can't support them, fellow leftist.

I wonder why.

Example from geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml:

In fairness to lemmy.ml, this one was too much bullshit even for them, and they gave it 91 downvotes and didn't delete anyone else's condemnation of it.

It's incredible to me how disingenuous and just... false... these people can be. And they still think they are doing the right thing? Or is this just soulless, paid astroturfing, I wonder?

Either way, they can't fight reality forever.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@piefed.social 2 points 6 hours ago

I mean, fighting reality to create an alternate desired reality has a longstanding success rate including in the recent past in basically every Western democracy. I am starting to agree with folks like this person that the fundamentals of modern society are becoming incompatible with the fundamentals that a society needs to have in the modern world in order to survive. I wish I knew what the fuck to do about it.
