Interestingly enough, I looked this up recently in my not AI mushroom field guide.

[–] mariusafa@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 day ago

Damn field mushrom manuals are so cool!!! They tell you every detail.

Since we are "encouraged" to use the bs generator at work, ive given it honest tries. Not once has it helped. Always wasted more time than if I just figured something out myself. Constantly telling me wrong shit.

Also. I feel like its accuracy is getting worse than a few months ago, but im unsure.

The people who like and use this trash are just plain unintelligent.

*note im not referring to machine learning or actual good uses of so-called ai, just bs generators (llms).

[–] swankypantsu@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

I was able to use it to write some selfhosted flask applications in python. I'm not a programmer but it did give me a good head start.

The only thing i use LLMs for is when i can't find anything by searching myself because it's too niche

(I use Searx and DuckDuckGo to search things)

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

here's my honest tries with Gemini when it replaced Google assistant on my phone

[–] virku@lemmy.world 107 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Every mushroom is edible at least once.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

For some reason, the thing I found most disturbing about that sentence was the "at least".

Some are a "once in a lifetime" experience

Letting the days go by...

______ is edible at least once.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Amanita Muscaria is really edible. You will probably have shits and vomits, but you will stay alive. And as side effects, euphoria and reality alterations

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 days ago (3 children)

"Edible" doesn't just mean something can be consumed. It means it can be consumed safely. Otherwise, anything that can be swallowed would be "edible."

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Meanwhile, in other circles, edible means it gets you high, so they're kinda onto something there. Though honestly, I'll pass on anything that makes me puke and gives me the shits. It's not that important to me to see a pink elephant when I look at my dog.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago

Also, people who drink alchool also vomit and people who drink coffee shit a lot...this fungus seems the combination of LSD, (too much) alchool and coffee

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

Although usually used as a noun rather than an adjective in that case.

[–] Ashiette@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

A. muscaria can be consumed safely, if you know how to prepare it.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

"Is this mushroom edible?"

"Yes."

eats it

"...IF prepared properly first."

[–] Ashiette@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The same could be said for... let's say cashew nuts. If it isn't prepared properly, it's pretty toxic.

[–] TRock 1 points 1 day ago

And apparently a cashew isn't even a nut

[–] gdog05@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

This is some Doctor Strange spellbook shit. "Why would they put the warnings at the end?"

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 days ago

One of those preparations is “filtered through a shaman’s (or in some cases, a reindeer’s) kidneys.”

Yes, Inuits would sometimes drink the urine from a shaman who had eaten A. Muscaria, and I have read (but not from a scholarly source so I’m not swearing to it) that in Siberian tribes they would do the same thing but with a reindeer doing the filtering.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Yes, sorry, I meant just "not deadly unless you're really going for it"

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Also, somehow legal when psilosybin mushrooms aren't, but Muscaria has worse effects for most people.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You can also boil it, for like 20 mins and then toss the water. Has a nice fishy texture that way. Used it for a mushroom ceviche

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

oh, yes, there is a large subset of mushrooms that are "edible if you nuke them". But as I'm not eating them for survival, I don't bother. Boletes, please!

[–] the_artic_one@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm a fan of detoxified muscaria but I gotta agree that it's not worth the extra effort unless you can't find any decent edibles.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There are also Blushers who are brothers to them, but without the toxic stuff. I wasn't collecting them, but you should probably check them out

[–] the_artic_one@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Blushers (section validae) are also toxic though their toxins are supposedly destroyed by heat, none of the species in my area are considered edible. Are you thinking of grisettes (section vaginata)?

I found a small Amanita constricta a couple weeks back that I dried but haven't gotten around to tasting yet.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Amanita Rubescens - yes, you have to prepare. them (but who even eats "usual" mushrooms as-is, I always fry them, or they go in a soup. But ad I said, I never tried them - when they are there, everything else is also there, so i had no incentives to "try something new" :)

Ah, that one is pretty rare in the PNW. The common blushers around here are A. augusta which is said to taste like cardboard by the few who have tested it and A. porphyria which is generally not considered edible.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If you eat more than really little, you won't be eating it (or anything else for that matter) ever again.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

If more is many mushrooms, then probably. But you've got to really try:)
And if you dry them, you'll get less of the "bad" ibotenic acid but keep the "interesting" muscimol

[–] kinsnik@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

fatal poisoning from Amanita muscaria are extremely rare. Wikipedia even says: the North American Mycological Association has stated that there were "no reliably documented cases of death from toxins in these mushrooms in the past 100 years"

not that the experience is pleasant, since it can include nausea, hallucinations, and even delirium. (also euphoria and relaxation, so idk)

All mushrooms are edible.. At least once..

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I've never seen an AI say yes.

There's always a paragraph about how great your question is, three paragraphs useless or made up information you didn't ask for, then a final paragraph where it comes to a conclusion it thinks you want to hear.

[–] Dumhuvud@programming.dev 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

it thinks

Please, do not anthropomorphise LLMs.

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Please do not quote out of context, it makes you sound like a right wing lunatic

[–] Dumhuvud@programming.dev 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pray tell, what kind of context changes the meaning of "thinks"?

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

concludes based on the algorithm

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And then you can ask again if it's edible and the AI will respond 'yes' again.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

To be fair, it is possible to eat the mushroom. And safely, at that. Just not raw.

Would you like to learn more about poisonous mushrooms that you could eat

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Of course its edible. In small doses. It even gets you high as an extra. This is why Mario takes them.

[–] Teppichbrand@feddit.org 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Please read this non-AI information about the use of the fly amanita. I was surprised to learn how commonly and widespread it is.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

AI is only as useful as the person verifying its output. If you don't know how to do that, enjoy the free food I guess.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

anything is edible, at least once.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

It is an excellent idea to eat this mushroom.
