How the hell can you be a chain smoker and run a marathon?!

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 48 points 1 year ago

It's China...

Smoking a filtered cigarette might be better air quality than just breathing the air...

The winner of the 1904 marathon was given rat poison. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_at_the_1904_Summer_Olympics_–_men%27s_marathon

Entire story is wild.

For podcast people the dollop also did an episode on this olympics. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KFLjcX163WI

I read the whole article. I wish Wikipedia articles had a comment section just or this article. What a wild ride.

Those are...surprisingly good marathon times, considering.

What, the rat poison?

Maybe but the guy was wrecked pretty much afterward and barely even finished. Could hardly walk for part of it.

[–] feedum_sneedson@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I see, that's too much then. I mean it's primarily a poison but I think it's from the same family as nicotine, interestingly enough.

[–] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Right? I can’t even finish one.

Something about the professional, detached tone combined with the absolute slapstick insanity of the article's content makes this perfect comedy

Holy hell this is definitely worth a read 😂

That was amazing. Thanks for sharing.

You should give the podcast a listen, I forgot the 1904 olympics was 7 months long.

A related video that's worth a watch for the sheer insanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myM5SY1mHoA

I knew a guy in the army who would smoke a cigarette right before and directly after his 2 mile PT test run. Dude would run it in under 12 minutes. Some people are just built differently than us normal humans.

[–] Cinner@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Nicotine is a potent stimulant. If you don't smoke all the time and get tarred lungs then I could see why that would be very bit official. like running a marathon on Adderall to a lesser degree

[–] DigitalTraveler42@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Had a whole gang of dudes like this in the Marines too, you said they're just built different, I say they're just nicotine addicts.

[–] GoodandPlenty@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

He was chasing them with cocaine.

I hope that's an American Dad reference...

Screw it, we'll just use magnets again

IMO any chain-smoker who attempts a marathon should be given a head start. Like a golf handicap.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I know you're joking, but that'd likely encourage people to pick up the habit, are you with big tobacco?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A 52-year-old Chinese man, who chain-smoked cigarettes while completing a marathon, has been issued banned for two years.

The man, identified by his surname Chen, completed the C&D Xiamen Marathon 2024, held on 7 January in three hours and 33 minutes, and smoked throughout.

Now, the Xiamen Marathon’s organising committee has issued a two-year ban on him from their races and reported him to the Chinese Athletics Association for further penalties.

He is popularly known as Uncle Chen and has earned the title of “Smoking Brother” in China, according to Canadian Running magazine, which first reported the incident.

The list also includes “open defecation, littering, trampling on the flowers and grass and other behaviours that might affect other runners”.

Last year, the Chinese Athletics Association introduced a proposal aimed at encouraging healthier participation and reducing smoking during road-running events.

The original article contains 372 words, the summary contains 139 words. Saved 63%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

Good?

Seriously chain smoking in public is just a dick move.

Doing so during a marathon of all places is even more of a dick move.

Banning a person like this is the right move.

[–] WashedOver@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago

Just like the good old days when athletes would smoke during breaks in the game. They sure were great times!

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As a former smoker I can't imagine doing it whilst running. Either he takes only light drags or is superficially smoking. Really inhaling fully during running would be very unpleasant.
