TIL I learned these things are called balloons.

[–] kernelle@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

On Android they're called toasts

[–] androogee@midwest.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In Mortal Kombat they're called Noob Saibot

Well, they'd probably be called tooltips now

[–] towerful@programming.dev 26 points 1 year ago (2 children)

A tooltip is more from an interaction. Hover over a button, and a tooltip pops up giving you a tip about the tool you are about to click.
Balloons don't come from interaction, and they point to something specific. Like an annotation or something.
Toasts are notifications. They can disappear after a while, or they might have to be manually dismissed.
A modal is a popup that prevents you interacting with other things.
A dialog is a popup that lets you interact with other things

I remember having a defective hdd in my PC. I brought the pc to the shop, where I bought it from to get it replaced under warranty. They told me they couldn't restore my data (I had backups) and asked if I wanted them to install windows on it. When they asked for my key I was like "FC..." and they responded "ok, we know that one, no need to spell it out" and proceeded with the installation

I don't know if it still works, but I found a "cheat" for free windows back in the day that I even upgraded into 10 with lol

My friend had an "upgrade" code for XP that he gave me, so when I installed windows and tried to use the code it gave me the whole "this is an upgrade code not a new code" kind of message. I rebooted the PC and used the same installer to "upgrade" my newly installed windows XP to windows XP. Same install, just did it again basically. It then accepted the code as valid lol

Today's kids use the activation scripts on GitHub which is owned by Microsoft. Just open cmd and run

irm https://massgrave.dev/get | iex

It will download the code storef here: https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts and run it, then windows is activated.

[–] refalo@programming.dev 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you can also use it to upgrade from home to pro/enterprise for free

[–] Socsa@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 year ago

For a while you could just remove all the permissions from the activation nagware on a trial install and it would run fine, and you'd even get updates. At some point they added some service which would periodically check those permissions and revert them, and I was never able to figure out what that process was.

Which means that there is apparently now a hidden user and access tier which exists solely to monitor windows system permissions, and I feel like this is my most noteworthy legacy in a small way.

I have a great uncle Bob, ok his names actually Robert but only his mother and business associates call him that. Bob is quite literally my uncle.

Can I use this to unlock Blu-Ray DRM? Or is that a different slang word?

[–] Turious@leaf.dance 48 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The HD-DVD key was 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0. Crazy slang all around. Kids are wild.

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

[–] sawdustprophet@midwest.social 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"Who was that?" "Bob. They had a baby. It's a boy."

[–] dolle 11 points 1 year ago

I've typed those letters SO many times. I remember being shit faced drunk in high school and getting a call from a friend who was installing Windows XP but forgot the key, because he just assumed that I could recite it. Which I could, and still can, 20 years later.
