Thank you for clarifying. I am still looking at self-hosting eventually because that seems like it is the only way to be long-term resistant to corporate stuff, but it is good to know it is not all bad.

I had closed the gate to my checkout, turned out the light, wiped everything down, took my till out and had walked away a bit when I saw a customer start loading his groceries on the now-abandoned belt.
i walked back to try to help by simply saying, "Sorry man, that checkout is closed, you'll have to go a few up to get through."
I went upstairs, counted my till and posted my results, got my stuff and went to leave.

Most people I know who are keen on the game are completely unaware of any of the the discourse surrounding it. It was probably minimal.
I can't wait to still only buy the game when it's on steep sale/after all the DLC can be bundled cheaply.
