The Orville season 2, episode 12 "Sanctuary"

Written by Joe Menosky, directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Moclan engineers are sent to the Orville to upgrade their weapons in response to the Kaylon threat. Commander Bortus discovers that they are also smuggling precious cargo to their next destination. After they've departed, word of this gets out and Captain Mercer follows them to a previously unknown star system hidden inside a nebula. On one of the planets they discover a coven of Moclan females living in hiding under the leadership of Heveena (Rena Owen). Once the Moclans also discover this sanctuary, Mercer races against time to have the Union formally recognize and protect the refugees before the Moclan government has them extradited as criminals. While this is happening, Bortus must also contend with Topa's disregard for females aboard the ship and Klyden's insistance that he only be taught traditional Moclan values.

Okay, I understand. What a shame that they’re already so political about making straight-forward decisions.

I must not be subscribed to the right communities because I knew nothing about this 12 hours ago.

I had only just heard about this this morning from another post made by .world admins saying that person had been delisted as a mod.

I can’t find that post anymore, but now I understand why. For all of .world’s problems, they are at least listening to people and fixing things.

I completely understand your position. The things I’ve learned about some of the people that are still controlling .world is something I wish I had known before making communities here… but it’s not quite enough to make me go through the effort of picking everything up and leaving.

I hate that an already splintered community is splintering further, but I’ll sub to yours as well. Best of luck.

The best part of this exercise is the presumption that one corner of Africa isn’t part of Africa but rather the Middle East.

It’s arbitrary borders all the way down.

Japan feels like it’s part of an alternate universe. Tower Records also still exists here.

W-why?

c/Risa was made as an alternative to r/Risa, because Reddit.

c/tenforward was made as an alternative to c/risa, because Reddit mods on Lemmy.

Now there’s another c/Risa on another instance? What drama did I miss?

The Orville season 2, episode 11 "Lasting Impressions"

Written by Seth MacFarlane, directed by Kelly Cronin.

Dr. Sherman (Tim Russ) brings a time capsule from early 21st-century Earth onboard the Orville for transport to a research facility. Among the items inside is a smartphone owned by Laura Huggins (Leighton Meester), a woman who lived in upstate New York during that time. Lieutenant Malloy takes a special interest in her and has the simulator take the data from her phone to create a simulation of what she and her life was like. What starts out as curiosity turns into an unhealthy obsession as Malloy begins neglecting duties and treating the simulation like a real person. Meanwhile, Commander Bortus and Clyden take interest in a different item from the time capsule; a pack of cigarettes.

In this video essay, I explore what The Orville reveals about life after capitalism, why scarcity is such a driving force in our current system, and how sci-fi holds up a mirror to our own society. There’s a lot to unpack, and the character, Lysella’s story on the Orville makes it all hit a little closer to home.
