Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

NSFW tag please homie
.... Because of the word foreskin? Are you kidding me? There's been a post on this community for a full day of someone with massive cleavage pulling the panties off of someone else that isn't marked NSFW but I need to for the word foreskin?
Edit: Been a good run 196. Take care. I'm out.
It was just a request due to the mental imagery maybe not being appropriate for someone to peek over your shoulder at the office, hence "not safe for work". Got a few reports on it and rather than start a whole debate in the mod channel, I asked you to tag it so that it is blurry by default to those who opt to blur NSFW posts.
There's no way for anyone on the Internet to know who's standing behind your shoulder. Everyone makes a best effort to put those tags, but it's all subjective.
Stop browsing at your desk if that's a problem for you, don't make it everyone else's problem that you work with people that would fire you if they saw this meme on your phone.
Nah if your workplace is that sensitive then it's on you to not browse Lemmy at work
The word "Fuck" is in the title of another post but you're not asking to nsfw that despite being obvious more NSFW than the word foreskin.
Correct. If the word foreskin is considered NSFW then what is the logic for allowing profanity?
Looks like shitty and inconsistent moderation isn't just a reddit thing.
Oh god you said the s word my boss is going to fire me 😭😭😭 please NSFW tag your words next time 😭😭😭
I told you it wasn't the word. You're being silly. Still, as I stated earlier, I do agree with you about a need for clear rules and consistent application, so I brought it up. You already declared you'd be going but I think it important to state that the input is appreciated.
Listen... I don't think you really get to call me silly here when you're reasoning for marking this post as NSFW was the imagery it conjures up in your head is NSFW and therefore should be tagged. Mainly because you can only get that from THE WORD. Unless your argument is that the mental imagery would have been just as NSFW with the word lips.
Like I said. I am not marking this NSFW. You can feel free to remove this if you wish, but I will not mark this. It is your community, you're the one who is allowed to decide on what you want done here. But your decisions also decide on whether or not I want to stay. And after several different inconsistent and confusing situations. I no longer know what the hell this community wants, so I don't want to be here. I'm not trying to be a dick. I'm not trying to be antagonistic. I'm not trying to be hostile. I'm just trying to be a user who actually stands by his principles. You are free to stand by yours as well.
Understood but do please note that I asked you to mark it NSFW not because I personally had a problem with it but because others (plural) had reported it as NSFW. This isn't the mods community, it is all of the users' community, including those that might not be OK with your post. The reason I did not take it down is because I do find it to fall in a gray area which is why I asked you to tag it rather than take an action I deemed heavy handed.
As I said, hopefully a clear set of guidelines comes out of this which will help both users and mods. I am, of course, sad to see you go over this but if posting to the community is harmful to you due to uncertainty and a lack of clarity you need, then you should absolutely not participate. Still...I hope to see your posts again some day.
Unless the amount of reports outweigh the amount of upvotes that this post was given, then you are not ruling by democratic choice. You're just capitulating to a minority of loud users which makes me trust you all even less.
Just because reports are made do not mean they are correct. Your job as a moderator is to look at the report and judge whether or not it actually lines up with the rules. If you do not personally believe that this lines up with the rules, then it is your job as a moderator to discuss with the other moderators whether or not you believe that it does. If you just immediately go, okay, well, I better listen to the three or four people who have reported this, then that doesn't really demonstrate any faith in you guys as a moderator, because it proves that if somebody with multiple different accounts comes in and reports the same thing multiple times, you guys are willing to go off and listen to them. Your own system is too flawed to be reliable. It is too weighted to be fair. I do not trust this system of running a community.
What you just described is not a system run by the community. It is a community that is run by the minority.
This Instance is meant to be a safespace where we try to accommodate as many as possible, especially those that are mistreated or whose needs are ignored elsewhere. If being asked to tag something as NSFW for the safety and comfort of others, no matter how small a minority, is a bridhe too far for you then I don't know what to tell you.
Accommodating a minority of people who should be more responsible at the expense of posters isn't good practice.
If someone is not ok with potentially seeing NSFW content, which this isn't, they should not be in a place that has such content to begin with.
Nsfw tags suppress posts that aren't actual NSFW content and remove the value of even having a nsfw tag in the first place.
This stance also makes the sub much more vulnerable to brigading if it only takes a relative few complaints to motivate you to censor someone.
I appreciate you not removing the post but harassing posters like this kills instances because the complainers don't post.
Can/Should you just mark the entire instance NSFW then?
Blur every image so that no vulnerable community members are ever confronted with an image or a word unconsenting.
The folks who stay here can click to see each post, thereby ensuing that noone gets in trouble at work because their boss or over-sensitive colleague is shoulder-surfing whilst naughty words are unconsentingly forced into the minds of innocent bystanders, thereby causing NSFW visualizations.
I don't think the community agrees with you. That's fine. It's your job to respond to the people.
Please put an NSFW tag on this. I was on the train and when I saw this I had to start furiously masturbating. Everyone else gave me strange looks and were saying things like “what the fuck” and “call the police”. I dropped my phone and everyone around me saw this image. Now there is a whole train of men masturbating together at this one image. This is all your fault, you could have prevented this if you had just tagged this post NSFW.
No, I don't want to mark things NSFW, especially when I can see something so delicious like that in public. At least text me next time and warn me when you're going to do it so I can try and get a good view.
~~Yeah, I thought the same thing this morning when I saw that. Still no NSFW tag or request from the mod despite literal rape joke.~~
This is a funny meme that says foreskin
Edit: was not sub friendly, mod took action
I just saw it and removed it due to lack of tag. Oddly, nobody reported it.
Based mod
hey, its ok. no one is mad at you. you dont need to defend or justify that you didnt think about it yourself. you can just tag the post and everyone will be happy. no harm done :)
No, it's more a stance of complete and utter disagreement. This is the third experience that I've had in as many weeks in an NSFW request on a post. The first one I disagreed with slightly, but could completely understand the request and also where they were coming from. The second one I disagreed with could understand it a bit less but could still see it to some extent. The word foreskin being something that needs to be marked as NSFW is, for me, ridiculous. I have deleted posts in the past instead of marking them as NSFW when requested and I think I'm just going to stop posting to this community instead. Partially because I don't agree with this. Mostly because every single request so far has had me thinking that I don't even understand what this community is trying to do.
I do not think anything less of the moderators, I am not angry at anyone here, I am not trying to insult anyone, I am not trying to push ill will in any way whatsoever. But. I am more confused in trying to figure out what to post here than I am anywhere else on Lemmy because the tone seems to be inconsistent. Whether that is through certain posts being marked as NSFW and other ones not, or certain comments being made by moderators that feel like they should apply to the same rules, but don't. A moderator made a post within the last hour that has the words testicles written in it. That is not marked NSFW. So why does the word foreskin require it?
I'm just confused and I don't really want to post somewhere where I'm constantly confused. I think I'm done with this community.
I am not a super active mod so I did not notice the other post. I definitely needs an NSFW tag. I do agree that a clear and consistent NSFW tag criteria should be communicated and applied and I will bring it up. Some pretty spicy posts have gotten through untagged and tagging is so low effort that there really is no reason not to do it.
Then remove the post. The word 'foreskin' being marked as NSFW while the word 'testicles' is posted by another moderator is genuinely the line for me. Y'all aren't consistent amongst yourselves.
I also take quite a bit of issue with you saying that it requires no effort to mark it as NSFW, therefore I should have done it. The ease at which I could have done it is irrelevant. My issue comes from the fact that you guys are not consistent with asking things to be marked to NSFW and that some of the requests made therein make absolutely no sense. For example, if the word for skin is something that needs to be marked as NSFW, does the word fuck? What about shit?
I can get marking a post as NSFW if the entire post is a chastity cage. I think it's fucking stupid asking me to do so when all of the chastity cages look nothing like a chastity cage and look like Pokemon, which was the entire point of the joke but whatever. I understand a little less when the chastity cage is very tiny and is lined up against a bunch of other monopoly pieces. But I cannot fathom any position in which the word foreskin would have to be marked as NSFW, while the rest of the posts on this community would be allowed. literally cannot come up with any situation in which the word foreskin in and of itself needs to be marked as NSFW while the rest of the community is allowed to run rampant with profanity.
This level of micromanagement is bothersome. It also leaves me in a position where I do not know what you guys as moderators want because you have too many cooks in the kitchen. You're not able to be consistent with the things that you want this community to do, which means that I as a poster, do not know what you want, which means I as a poster will no longer be posting on this community anymore.
things are heating up in the Nintendo DS foreskin fandom
I myself don't think stretching one's foreskin over a Nintendo DS is a very "safe for work" idea. Context matters.
It's fair to point out inconsistencies in enforcement of the rule if you notice them though, not something I can comment on.
No. It doesn't. The NSFW tag is supposed to be applied to something that is visually NSFW, not a concept or idea that when manifested inside of ones head becomes NSFW. The issue at hand is whether or not the visual information depicted rises to the level where an NSFW tag is needed. In my opinion? It does not. It also DEFINITELY does not when one mod is asking for the tag and another mod is doing the thing that would seemingly require that tag but doesn't. That leaves me, as a poster, incredibly confused and not sure how the hell the rules are supposed to be applied. Combined with me repeatedly bringing the level of NSFW stuff in my posts down while seeing other posts go RAMPANT with utter rape jokes?
No.
Absolutely not. I'm not posting here anymore.
Bro you need to chill out
I am. I'm sorry that my insistence of stating my opinion in a discussion about opinions offends you.
Who said it offended me? I don't really care you're just writing essays when no one is mad at you just asking for it to be marked nsfw as it is over the line to show up while scrolling for example at work
My guy just because it requires you to be angry in order to put that much effort into a post doesn't mean that that's required of me. That was like two minutes and I barely noticed.
Are you all ignoring the fact that the title of NSFW posts is not blurred? The image is not NSFW by itself, the title is. It's pointless to tag that.
If you want to tag it because of people that filter NSFW posts, I disagree with using the tag as a catch all, we need more tags.
i think the logic is, that when someone fells something is not safe for work, they will either mark it as such or request that it be marked as such. as i said, you don't have to justify that you did not think of it. you didn't know in advance and you are not expected to. all that is expected, is that when asked, you will mark your post as nsfw. just accommodate for the unique needs of the unique people around you, when it comes up.
so please dont delete your posts or stop posting, just mark your posts as nsfw when asked to and everything is fine :3
No. I am not blindly obedient to requests. I am not a bot. I am a human being with my own opinions and the opinion at the moment is that the request to mark this as NSFW is ridiculous. I am not catering to the 3 people who think that foreskin is such an offensive word that it cannot be seen in public. If the mods are insistent that this post requires an NSFW tag then they can remove it. I am done deleting it but I am also done posting to this community. Multiple mods giving me multiple requests with multiple consistencies leaving me WILDLY confused. It's not worth my effort to continue posting here when I'm going to have to go back and change my own criteria for posting to this community every week.
ok, leave i suppose, if you dont want to stay. i hope that you will learn to give more care and empathy to the people around you. it is not blind obedience to accomodate others, especially when it comes at no personal cost. just trust them, even if you don't understand it.
marking the post as nsfw would have taken you seconds, but instead you wrote multiple long comments ranting against it.
The issue was not the tag. The issue was the inconsistent request and application of it. I'm sorry that you couldn't recognize that despite those multiple long comments being written exclusively to say that.
You're safe, it's not an actual picture of a Nintendo DS.
