The best part about it is that almost no US tech would work without Taiwan's chips

Oh and that China somehow did not get angry at that publicly as of yet, very weird

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 188 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

At this point in time, China is just sitting back and laughing as Trump weaken the US.

Remember, don't correct an enemy as they are making a mistake.

For all it's flaws, the TPP was about to effectively zone China out of trading advantageously with the whole developed world. Now, US instability and bullying have made Japan and South Korea partner with China.

Trump is handing China the 21st century on a silver platter.

[–] Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de 53 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Imagine being such a clown that Japan, China and SKorea unite against you lmao

[–] jaxxed@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Did Japan and SK actually announce collaboration with China, or was it only China that said that they are working together?

[–] Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de 26 points 2 weeks ago

They held a rare trade talk, but the announcement came from Chinese state media.

Critical support to Trump in his struggle against US hegemony.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The TPP still exists. The USA backed out of it, but the USA doesn't matter anymore.

It's also quite ironic that originally China's low wages were seen as the core problem/reason how they could offer products so cheaply.
But the way Trump is destroying things the need for low US wages will come up again...

Alas, of course everything across the board will get more expensive with his tariffs, from vegetables, to electronics, energy and housing, so the common worker will be screwed and locked in his situation, preferably unable to go on strike.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

They're patiently waiting for the value of American businesses crash hard to buy it for cheap

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'm sure they rationally assume Trump is totally unfamiliar with that policy.

He also listed uninhabited Australian islands and a US military base on an otherwise uninhabited UK island as separate countries. So I would guess China decided that the country list is basically meaningless.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

That's because the DOGE morons used TLD codes to make the list.

It could help with global warming by decreasing consumption.

Other than the crippling economic crisis it's putting us through, I really like that things in the grocery store are better labelled to show they're local or Canadian now. I've always preferred to buy local because it's better for the environment, now it's easier.

The EU. Everyone's favourite country.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well it's a single trading block with free internal trade, it would be Impossible have different import tax levels for different countries within the union without them being trivial to circumvent.

[–] match@pawb.social 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

if he really wanted to do some damage, he could pick a random port city - Durrës, say - and decide that goods sent from there incur no tariff. then, after the logistics change to ship out of there, invert the tariff structure and send that region into unrest

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

Is this the lore for Euro Truck Simulator?

I said that in a thread the first day felon 47 showed us that .

I said this "New headline. Trump tariffs confirm Taiwan sovereignty."

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He had some things like that his first term too. I'm pretty sure he does just to piss China off. He's not really interested in helping Taiwan.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Oh I know. I'm pretty sure though he doesn't understand why it pisses china off.

[–] Prandom_returns@lemm.ee 41 points 2 weeks ago (27 children)

Yep, because Taiwan is a country, and the real China.

Putting tariffs on Taiwan is the first step to making them reconcile with China.

Cambodia at 97% highlights how fucking moronic this all is. Let me reindustrialize the economy by cutting off our raw inputs.

[–] kn0wmad1c@programming.dev 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

A reconciliation goes both ways; that is, both parties are happy.

If that's the case, then my post still stands.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

yeah, sure. reminds me of this nonsense

The REAL reason China slapped the US with those reciprocal tariffs.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago

xi is gonna be pissed both that they recognize taiwan and that they charge them less

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well that's because they're different regi--.. oh it says Countries

[–] lemmydividebyzero@reddthat.com 12 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, countries like the EU, which is also on the list.

[–] Brotha_Jaufrey@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

Bro looks like a corpse

[–] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

And one more to the Mueller stack

Russia received no additional tariffs

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Russia is already on its own "special list" of countries that have very heavy trade restrictions. Like North Korea.

I don't think tariffs would've made a difference there.

[–] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago (13 children)

Trump imposed tariffs on uninhabited islands near Antarctica, but not Russia.
