Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

fact check, true. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_Black_Ops_II

Black Ops II's single-player campaign features two connected storylines, with the first set from 1986 to 1989 during the final years of the First Cold War, and the other set in 2025 during a Second Cold War and rare earths trade dispute[15] between the United States and China.

A related tangent: Ghost Recon had a plot about Russia invading Georgia in 2008. That game was from 2001.

[–] HalfSalesman@lemm.ee 1 points 14 minutes ago* (last edited 13 minutes ago) (1 children)

Yeah but Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has US soldiers protecting its universe's version of Putin from a coup. Its set in 2024.

It released in 2012.

Sometimes they get it very wrong.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 1 points 1 minute ago

Or they got it very accurate? 🤷

That sounds like what could happen.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

you fact checked the fiction

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Fiction check.

That Blops2 summary implies the new cold war began because of something China did.

In this timeline it's 100% the US

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 141 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Or the Blops2 summary is American propaganda and purposefully avoids mentioning why China did what they did

[–] _____@lemm.ee 119 points 2 days ago (6 children)

call of duty is 100% propaganda

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wait why all countries? What did Canada do?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 37 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trade the refined products to the US

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If they hadn't noticed the rest of the world isn't really looking up to the current USA either.

[–] Dave2@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago

You don't need to look up to a country to want to turn a profit right?

Dear gods. Without rare earth metals the US could regress technologically. We'd likely revert to cathode ray tubes and other post WW2 tech. That is until fusion is sustainable and then we get fight over energy for some reason. Next thing you know it's October 23, 2077...

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 52 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Rare earth metals aren’t even rare though. They are just not found in concentrated form like gold. And metallurgists in the past had a hard time isolating the metals that’s why they called them rare.

It’s just that China can mine them cheaply since the Chinese government doesn’t care about labor rights and the environment. Europe and Australia has rare earth metal deposits.

[–] Taalnazi@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Europe and Australia do, but honestly, as a European, I'd rather trade with China than the US right now. Even though both are shit.

[–] ProctorZeuss@aussie.zone 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Why are we always having to choose the lesser of 2 evils! Where's the fkn good option!!!
