JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.

It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.

Just Dumb does not joke around.

*athletes

tourists will be homebrewn, dont worry

[–] VampirePenguin@midwest.social 30 points 4 hours ago

How funny will it be when all of the seats are empty? Americans don't care about soccer, this event will be funded by tourism and now those folks will be opting out. If I were planning this event I'd be livid. Vance, shut your stupid fucking mouth and never speak again as long as you live.

Didn’t the Nazis host the Olympics? Why does history rhyme?

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 54 minutes ago

The stadium is still in use and home to Hertha Berlin.

[–] b161@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

If you go to this you’re a fucking idiot. Not worth being sent to an El Salvador concentration camp just to watch a soccer match. Just watch it on tv.

[–] Zacpod@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago

People went to Qatar to sit in slave-built stadiums. Don't expect any morals from FIFA fans.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 17 points 4 hours ago

If you support fifa in any way, you’re an idiot. I don’t have much hope that anybody will change their behavior.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 28 points 5 hours ago

I know FIFA is corrupt but does anyone not see how dangerous traveling to the United States currently is?

[–] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 10 points 5 hours ago

God I h8 this man and all of the gop goons. It blows my mind that I’m 2 years older than couch fucker. Yet my mindset is a complete 180° compared to him.

[–] muusemuuse@lemm.ee 18 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

God, these guys are tonedeaf.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Honestly I don't think they are. They literally decided they were fine with committing treason, and their overall plan is probably similar to the bullshit great replacement theory they push. Except that they are literally selling the country out from under us, and will eventually start having ANYONE deported if they aren't a cooperative slave, or part of the plan. As Americans disappear, I guarantee that more Russians and saudis will come into the country.

[–] Binky@lemmy.sdf.org 24 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Because what we really want from our government officials is more laughing at the pain and suffering of others.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

that, and to chill anyone that MIGHT come to America for the American games out of coming to America for the American games and ensure America doesnt get any of that sweet tourism money.

5 bucks says Mexico and Canada's stadiums are full, while Americas stadiums are maybe..lets be generous and say 1/3rd full, and I'd wager most of that would be from super low cost tickets in desperation to get people in the seats so it doesnt look completely empty during broadcast.

This is why tech bros make horrible politicians.

[–] FreedomAdvocate@lemmy.net.au 4 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Did you just call JD Vance a tech bro?! Lol

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

He is Peter Thiel's puppet, so they're not really off the mark.

[–] FreedomAdvocate@lemmy.net.au 2 points 1 hour ago

It's very far off the mark lol. JD Vance was in the military, is a lawyer, and a politician. He has never had anything to do with tech lol.

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 64 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Haha human rights violations are hilarious

This guy can't even pretend to be a normal person.

Most of the matches are in red or previous swing states, Washington is the only actually blue state on the roster, this would just be more hurting their own

[–] muusemuuse@lemm.ee 5 points 6 hours ago

Gotta feed those leopards

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Massachusetts is hosting games.

[–] EpeeGnome@lemm.ee 6 points 9 hours ago

That's never stopped them before.

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Ah yes, California, the reddest state of all

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 40 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Fortunately, if this shit keeps up, there are two other countries where to celebrate matches. Mexico is shaping up nicely for the World Cup, and tourism comes natural to our culture.

[–] tankplanker@lemmy.world 29 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

That its being co hosted will backfire on the US. If it was just the US and nobody turned up they can and will blame football for that rather than their own idiocy, but because Mexico and Canada are also hosting matches if they get great attendance then its clearly an issue with the US.

If you want to go, go to the matches in Mexico or Canada, spend your money there.

[–] Witziger_Waschbaer@feddit.org 10 points 9 hours ago

Haha nope, they will of course blame Mexico and Canada in that case. Or the people who prefer to go there. I think they are completely immune to any thought about the consequences of their own actions.

[–] mtoboggan@feddit.org 49 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

As long as MAGA policies and the walking farts responsible for them are in place/in charge, I will never again set foot on US soil. There are plenty of other places to visit.

And they wonder why tourism is decreasing

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 hours ago

it's not decreasing, it's gone.

[–] Sixtyforce@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

I guess I'm more risk adverse than most because I was pretty stunned to last see the decline is only single digit % still globally besides Canada.

[–] hexonxonx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

That's because overseas vacationers to the US buy their tickets many months ahead of time for deeper discounts and to make sure they can get a hotel room. Give it a couple more months...

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

Were a few months out for the other shoe to drop on a lot of this shit. Ships take a long time to get places, once the last ones are done with their routes, they wont be coming back. Retailers have stockpiles and wearhouses for things, but those only last so long.

I expect to really start noticing thing to be out of stock by mid-late summer and expect the 2025 holiday season to be a consumerist bloodbath (pay attention to Spirit Haloween, they grow on the corpses of other businesses and their unexpired building leases, if they dont show up, thats an indication that shits gotten real)

[–] CatSuperVillain@lemm.ee 6 points 6 hours ago

It’s sad to see the numbers that low but I think that percentage will continue to climb. I would think a lot of the visitors have planned out these trips quite a while ago and may not be able to change or refund them. Going forward, I would think the number of tourists willing to go to the US will decline.
