I hope it wasn't the same reporter that got shot in the leg the other day.

US is probably not scoring many points with your average Australian.

These are the same people who championed freedom of speech and cried about censorship. I know they’re spineless hypocrites, but I don’t understand how the MAGAts can justify this to themselves.

[–] zqps@sh.itjust.works 8 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

It's a game to them. You feel like you're winning by making sure the enemy loses.

[–] this@sh.itjust.works 11 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

This is another (illegal I would argue) border phone search. If you come to the us as a non citizen, I would highly reccomend getting a burner phone at this point.

In theory, you have the right to lock your phone with a pin or password and tell them to fuck off if they ask you for it, but I wouldn't depend on that right.

[–] lazynooblet@lazysoci.al 14 points 14 hours ago

You would likely be refused entry for not handing over the phone, legal or not.

Using a burner phone is the best bet.

Is this not protected speech?

[–] nickwitha_k@lemmy.sdf.org 44 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Under the First Amendment, explicitly yes.

[–] HejMedDig 3 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Does the Constitution apply to non-us citizens?

[–] nickwitha_k@lemmy.sdf.org 22 points 17 hours ago

Yes. It applies to everyone within the borders of the US and US territories, and regardless of whether they are there legally.

[–] diablexical@lemm.ee 9 points 17 hours ago

100% but power is all that matters in the end. I think there’s an exception for invading forces which is why the admin trumped that up for the Venezuelans that were deported.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 26 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I don’t think we have rules anymore.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 8 points 20 hours ago

Tbf you don't have regular rules anymore. You only have special orangeman rules that have been enacted despite courts consistently finding they aren't real rules.

[–] match@pawb.social 13 points 21 hours ago (2 children)
[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 8 points 19 hours ago

Well, the courts potentially. I am asking mainly to see whether this guy could impose another costly and embarrassing court case on the administration. While people are saying they can do whatever they want unless stopped, and there is truth to this, the more pushback, the more political cost.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 8 points 20 hours ago

We, The People.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 10 points 22 hours ago

It should be, but obviously not.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 8 points 22 hours ago

Not lately.

Oh shit the Nazis have taken over every level of the American government.

Fear for your lives if they approach you. Act accordingly.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think we already knew they'd taken over Customs and Immigration. This is yet more of the same shit they've been pulling for decades - just more blatant and with a lot more coverage than usual, which is nice that people are finally seeing what they're doing. Eyes-on is, despite the lack of rebellious glamour, a critical thing to have...

[–] seven_phone@lemmy.world 64 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can't have any free thinking or free speech in the land of the free, that's not what we mean by free. It doesn't mean you don't have to pay either.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 15 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

The land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy.

[–] SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works 4 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

What does the billboard say?

Come and play

Come and play

Forget about the Movement

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 3 points 22 hours ago

It's the land of the free.

Let's fight! Please don't hit me too hard, I have American health insurance. Have some sympathy for your enemy?

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago

While everyone else was doing freedom of thought, conscience and expression fascists were cooking up their magnum opus: Freedom from thought, freedom from conscience and freedom from expression.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Damn. Crazy. I was told this only happened in Evil Foreign Country.

Beginning to wonder if Americans are not, in fact, Exceptional.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 13 points 23 hours ago

We’re exceptional in all the wrong ways.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I mean they're the first 21st century fascists. That's certainly exceptional.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Hardly the first. Just the loudest.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

He's the first successful example of a fascist takeover, is what I meant.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

He’s the first successful example of a fascist takeover

Milei beat Trump by months. Bolsonaro and Bukele beat him by years. The Philippines has been changing hands between the fascist Macro and Duterte families for over a decade. Then you've got the ascension of MBS in the Kingdom of Saud, Netanyahu in Israel, and el-Sisi in Egypt. All of them fall comfortably within the fascist spectrum. All of them have consolidated power and forced out opposition groups at gunpoint. MBS straight up dismembered several of his rivals with bone saws, ffs.

Hell, if I was going to point to anyone as a clear front-runner in fascist takeover, I'd be more inclined to point to Vladimir Putin of Russia. After assuming the Presidency in 2000, he spent his first two terms consolidating the fractured authority of the former Soviet government into a modern, fully compliant ethno-nationalist aligned mafia state.

I might have pointed to George Bush Jr, if he hadn't fumbled the bag in 2005 and allowed insurgents in his own party to spoil his attempt at a Permanent Republican Majority by turning on him over immigration reform. Trump was hella-late to the party. He couldn't even go full fash on his first turn in the office.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

That's authoritarianism, not necessarily fascism. Fascism is a subset of rightwing authoritarianism characterized by, among other things, the authoritarian leader enacting escalating persecution of an increasing number of people to back up their fascist rhetoric.

Hell, if I was going to point to anyone as a clear front-runner in fascist takeover, I'd be more inclined to point to Vladimir Putin of Russia.

That's fair, but I wouldn't describe Putin as fully fascist. He's more of a proto-fascist rightwing authoritarian, though his conduct in Ukraine is certainly cutting it close. What make me hesitant to call him a fascist is that, after he completed his takeover, he didn't make up crises and go after minorities to keep power like the original fascists. Compare with Trump's treatment of immigrants and you'll see what I mean. I'd have no problem saying rhat Trump is this generation's Hitler, while for example Putin doesn't really fit.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 57 minutes ago

Fascism is a subset of rightwing authoritarianism characterized by, among other things, the authoritarian leader enacting escalating persecution of an increasing number of people to back up their fascist rhetoric.

Saudi authorities have permitted the use of lethal force to clear land for a futuristic desert city being built by dozens of Western companies, an ex-intelligence officer has told the BBC.

What make me hesitant to call him a fascist is that, after he completed his takeover, he didn’t make up crises and go after minorities to keep power

He absolutely did. That was what the entire Chechnyan War was about. Plus his embrace of ethnic Russian social identity, which was the cause belli of the Donbas invasion. Also, the party's pogrom against Muslims and the LGBTQ community.

Compare with Trump’s treatment of immigrants and you’ll see what I mean.

We’re so utterly fucked. The only silver lining is that none of it is shocking this time, so at least that part’s less exhausting.

As much as I hate Australians this is over the line.

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, keep making jokes. Your country is circling the fascist toilet while you make checks notes an average of 17.5 Lemmy shitpost comments a day.

slow clap

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not like he's a vowel-hating Icelander.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Honestly even the French rank higher than Australians.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 3 points 17 hours ago

Woah, not the fr*nch!
