The first group of immigrants has arrived at a new detention center deep in the Florida Everglades that officials have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a spokesperson for Republican state Attorney General James Uthmeier told The Associated Press.

“People are there,” Press Secretary Jae Williams said, though he didn’t immediately provide further details on the number of detainees or when they arrived.

“Next stop: back to where they came from,” Uthmeier said on the X social media platform Wednesday. He’s been credited as the architect behind the Everglades proposal.

“Stood up in record time under @GovRonDeSantis ’ leadership & in coordination with @DHSgov & @ICEgov, Florida is proud to help facilitate @realDonaldTrump ’s mission to enforce immigration law,” the account for the Florida Division of Emergency Management posted to the social media site X on Thursday. Requests for additional information from the office of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and FDEM, which is building the site, were not returned early Thursday afternoon.

The facility, at an airport used for training, will have an initial capacity of about 3,000 detainees, DeSantis said. The center was built in eight days and features more than 200 security cameras, 28,000-plus feet (8,500 meters) of barbed wire and 400 security personnel

This just tells you how fast they could fix homelessness, hunger, and poverty, if they gave a single solitary fuck about anyone but themselves.

Imagine bragging about how quickly you made a tent city.

It is alligator auschwitz. It is run by nazis. People who have traded their humanity away. Monsters.

This is what EVERYONE needs to be calling it.

"Back to where they come from". So very easy to say when you and your family are excused this same challenge

What's their plan when a hurricane comes?

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 11 hours ago

The national weather service is defunded and not even sending out weather balloons anymore, and is losing access to a military satellite used for hurricane detection. (Facts.)

So, there aren't hurricanes anymore, just freak random storms that come out of nowhere for some reason. We did it everybody! /s

It's clearly to let people die.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Sadly and angrily yes.

Let the storm sweep the bodies away so they can hold more. These monsters do not care about their victims.

[–] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Let's be honest. Most of the staff will die because they didn't know to evacuate or didn't believe they need to.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 11 points 22 hours ago

Or because they can't stand to be away from mass suffering lest their erections drop

[–] KnitWit@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

If only we had more warning. Although I guess that’s the plan for after the hurricane comes.

Now imagine if they gave even half as much of a shit about building housing for low-income families.

These are not livable facilities. They're chainlink fence pens under neither carnival tents.

tbf, alligator Auschwitz isn't fit for human habitation.

DeSantis can fuck himself (imho)

A while back, people in Florida built an absolutely massive airport in the middle of the Everglades. They wanted to build the next big regional hub covering all of South Florida, but that never happened. So there's a massive gigantic 12,000 ft runway, huge amounts of concrete apron, and space for a big passenger terminal that was never built. The runway remains open as a general aviation airport, and was until now mostly visited by students to practice touch and go landings.

My points:

  1. The article summary saying it's an airport used for training is true, but slightly misleading.
  2. There's a lot of things about this place that make logistical sense for the type of operation they want to do: cheap rent or land, lots of available concrete, not actually new build (easier environmental impact statement), easy on site access to a massive airport that can support jets of any size, low amounts of air traffic, and secluded from public view.
  3. It's not actually in Everglades National Park, and they aren't filling in wetlands, like I've seen some say.

I've only been to Florida once and I found it strange that everything was covered in lizards. I'm sure people from Florida find it strange that my state is often covered in snow. However, I thought as Americans we at least all supported a minimum level of human rights for all people.

Now I find these southern states strange because they're willing to throw out centuries of common law because immigrants.

[–] LordCrom@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

I'm from here.....and noting that everything is covered in lizards is honestly something I never noticed or paid attention to ...it's just normal for me. What an interesting little piece of anthropology for me to absorb from a random Lemmy quote.

And yes, there are 3 house lizards on my window right now as I type this.

It was built for the Concord to land with a minimum sonic boom.

Didn’t it flood? Wash away would’ve been ideal.

A biblical message about compassion

[–] mister_flibble@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago

Yeah, I read that as well. Ironically enough, it actually gave me a tiny shred of hope that we might get exceptionally lucky and the fucking thing would get wiped out by a hurricane or something before they managed to actually get anyone in there, but unfortunately the bastards work fast.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Florida would be proud of this shit
