It's the transitions that are the enemy! Getting un/dressed and getting dry are both annoying. In summer when I'm only wearing shorts and can airdry in the warmth I'm fine taking a shower. But most of the year I just hate the transition...

[–] bstix 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I used to dread leaving the warm shower and getting cold while drying. Then I figured out that if I gradually turn the temperature down while only showering the head, that it both feels refreshing, but not cold, and also makes the entire transition less cold. The key is that the brain gets most of it's idea of temperature from the head.

The same tactic can also be used at the beach. Instead of inching your way into the cold water until the testicles crawl up and you finally give up, you're much better off if you just put the top of your head into the water first.

I do this in the summer to try to avoid immediately starting to sweat when I get out of the shower

Which head are you talking about here?

Its the change of state that should be avoided. It doesn't always go well so it should never happen.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 7 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Avoid it by always staying soggy. Live life perpetually damp. Always slightly moist.

Like living in the tropics?

Hey! You just exposed my entire mental model online

Are you me?

My dream! Seriously, I've looked into this before.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Getting undressed reminds me of seks, that's why I don't mind that part. The drying however 😒

[–] RedstoneValley@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

You're onto something there. It's the same thing with travel/vacations for me. I don't like the idea of travelling while transitioning aka packing my stuff. But as soon as I am actually underway I don't want to go back home

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This is exactly my problem. I never knew anyone else had this issue.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

You two should never walk through a doorway on mushrooms.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

Disagree - try taking a bath and washing your hair without a shower head, only a bowl.

With a shower head: the temperature is constant, nothing special

With a bowl: the alternating hot and cold of the warm water trickling down your shoulders punctuated by the ambient cooler air is satisfying as hell

Someone explained in a reel that I saw once that the reason we feel like this is because we struggle with transitions.

It made a lot of sense; like as to why I take so long to leave my bed for the first time after I wake up, or why I can never motivate myself to go walk outside, but when I'm already outside walking because I was forced to be, I'll walk 20 blocks to the grocery store to avoid having to sit down and be still for 10 minutes waiting for the bus.

PS: I've only been using Lemmy for something like 10 minutes total so far, only heard of it 15 minutes ago, and this is my first ever comment here, so if I'm making any dumb mistakes with formatting, or if say my comment ends up in the wrong place or something, it's because I haven't learned the platform's ins and outs yet. Plz no judge. Reddit was really judgmental today and that's why I came here.

I put a little space heater and run it while I'm showering so that it's warm when I get out.

[–] darvocet@infosec.pub 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I do this too but put the heater in the shower with me - makes the space all nice and toasty.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oooh I should try that with the bathtub.

[–] darvocet@infosec.pub 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Some houses have shitty electric in the bathrooms so to make sure it keeps working with the steam, i run an extension cord to a bedroom outlet.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Do you think it would work if I used a portable generator in the room with me while the space heater is in the tub?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just make sure to keep the windows shut so the heat can't escape

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago

I'll seal them up with plastic sheets and caulk to make sure.

[–] darvocet@infosec.pub 3 points 2 weeks ago

Wow i don't know. It's worth a shot! I bet the exhaust is exfoliating.

In Korea almost all homes have heated floors and the entire bathroom is basically treated like a shower. Which I like in some ways. But I really think they should more directly separate the toilet from the design in a separate closed off area. Most of the time it's just a small divider between the showering area and the sink toilet.

But I guess the point of my comment is that the heated floors are awesome and basically standard. Where as in the US that's a luxury and something you have to specifically design into the bathroom. It really avoids that nasty feeling of stepping onto a cold floor. No mat required.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I've only ever experienced heated floors at a hotel in Vegas. It was so nice. I wish I had it, but the space heater is my white trash version of it.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I would love a wet room bathroom. I really regret not doing that when renovating the ensuite where I live now. it wasn't my bathroom at the time though..

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have a heat bulb in my bathroom so I use that in the colder months. I love it.

[–] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 8 points 2 weeks ago

I think about this post at least once a week when I shower

[–] RedSnt 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I literally have to trick myself every morning. Like, I'll start with: "I'll just wash my face. Maybe my ears as well.." and then "Might as well wash the rest of my body.." and then realize it's easier to just turn on the shower at that point.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I can relate. I shave in the shower. Prevents the ingrown hairs I get with my facial hair type. It's an additional struggle though when I'm IN the shower deciding if I feel like shaving in addition to washing myself. It's for some reason an additional step once I'm in the shower. Not sure why.

[–] Unpigged@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

I like warm bath, or a good shower. I like being a dry coach potato.

Transition between the two is unbearable.

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yep. I never want to shower. I always have to do it deliberately.
