President loses out to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as his dream of surpassing Barack Obama’s achievements continues to elude him

Donald Trump has lost out on the Nobel Peace Prize after the Norwegian committee responsible for awarding the honor chose Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado instead.

Asle Toje, deputy leader of the Nobel committee, had already signaled that Trump might not get it by suggesting that his aggressive campaigning for the accolade might count against him.

“These types of influence campaigns have a rather more negative effect than a positive one,” Toje said. “Because we talk about it on the committee. Some candidates push for it really hard, and we do not like it.”

He thinks he can get for doing the same nothing Obama got his before he normalized killing US civilians...

I know it was 16 years ago and people might not remember, but he literally got a peace prize for the "promise of peace" and then later we found out he was drone striking US citizens during that time

trump sure as shit shouldn't get one, but Obama shouldn't have either.

Everyone acknowledges that Obama's Nobel Prize was a mistake -- even committee members.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/obama-peace-prize-1.3231064

I couldn't find a definitive link, but I remember that Obama was seriously considering declining the prize, or not traveling to accept it. In the end, he decided it was better diplomatically to accept it rather than snub the committee.

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah everyone knew it was a mistake shortly after the award. It's amazing when supporters of a politician were willing to criticize them...oh the good ol days.

but Obama shouldn’t have either.

Fair, but I still love that it annoys Taco and his widdle fanboiz that the Blah guy got a prize their golden god-emperor will not get.

OK, so what would your policy be to address the situation of US citizens joining with non-state groups and actively attacking the US? Like, say, Al-Qaida? International law of war is weak on non-state actors, classifying them as "irregulars" or bandits and relying on their host states to deal with them, which is unrealistic in many cases, and which fails to anticipate the rise of such groups with global reach. And the notion of adjudicating matters like this in the courts in advance makes no sense either.

Because I wouldn't shed a tear for anyone like that who got killed, whether by aerial bombardment, a drone strike, an artillery shell or a bullet. Al-Awlaki, the poster child for the drone-strike handwringers, was in an AQ camp in Yemen at the time his propagandistic ass was blown up. If ridding the world of him and his fellow jihadis means no Peace Prize, fine. Small price to pay.

And why is it that the same hand-wringers act as if drone strikes are somehow different than any other way of the military killing someone? The meme reeks of emotional manipulation. Dead's dead.

To declare an interest and give some context, I vocally and publicly opposed the second Gulf War and am against the US's habit of heavyhanded, ineffectual military interventions. But if someone's actually coming for you and you have the means to send them on to the afterlife, you're worse than a fool if you don't do it.

I hate that language.

"Donald Trump has lost out on the Nobel Peace Prize"

No. He was never in the running. He lost nothing. Just because he was nominated by some obsequious sycophant, doesn't mean he ever had a chance.

While everyone else was in competition for the "race", he was at the starting line shitting his diapers and crying like the giant baby he is.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 25 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

He “lost” the Nobel Peace Prize the same way I “lost” an academy award, is what you’re saying.

Maybe next year

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Personally I approve of any publicity that calls out Trump as a loser.

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nominated by who and when? Nominations ended in January.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

Because he has a history of knowing and caring about rules?

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's important, and also the best kind of correct, though.

Trump lost. He's a loser.

[–] JailElonMusk@sopuli.xyz 22 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks Obama.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 17 points 2 weeks ago

Was this even a question? His rage boner for Obama has been the most consistent thing about him other than his virulent racism, which is probably why getting roasted by Obama was such a huge thing for him.

Terrible combative trolls who send people just trying to find a better life to terrorism super prisons don't get prizes for internationational diplomacy and peace Donnie...

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Henry Kissinger has entered the chat

No, there was a real chance he'd wind up being awarded this prize. It's always been the most politically manipulated of the Nobel prizes (some might say inherently), and trump's undeniably massive influence through the global alt-right had a nonzero chance of swaying the prize to him, be it as an act of capitulation, bribery or simply that the prize committee had been infiltrated by his sycophants.

That it wasn't, and was instead awarded to a candidate who is both incredibly deserving of being honored and an incidentally-I'm-sure slap in the fat orange bastard's face, is a deeply refreshing sign.

[–] selkiesidhe@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago

Obama is everything he wishes he could be. Well liked, handsome, fit, in a loving marriage, won a nobel prize.

PEDOnald is a vaguely human shaped sack of spoiled mayonnaise and diarrhea. Zero talent. Zero love.

Bombs boats from Venezuela.

Loses to opposition leader from Venezuela.

Fucking comedy gold.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Loses to opposition leader from Venezuela.

I believe she thanked him for bombing those boats.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Obama's highest approval: 69%
Trumps highest approval: 49%

Trump has literally never captured half the country. Obama, on the other hand, had a huge majority.

Obama's highest disapproval rating was 37%
Trumps highest disapproval rating is 62%

This has how far we've fallen. This guy is such a piece of shit. He knows it, and he's punishing everyone for it daily. His followers don't realize it, but they are getting fucked in the long term just as much, if not more.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

What matters is democracy... and the Epstein files.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Bombs Iran. Nobel Peace prize pretty please.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

It’s pretty clear that Obama accomplished more for peace just by getting elected than Trump has in nearly five years as president.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yep. The Blah guy getting the Nobel Peace Prize has been eating at the pedo-in-chief for years and years. It also eats at a whole lot of his racist knuckle-dragging fanboiz.

[–] credo@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

If he doesn’t win one he’ll probably bomb them to show how much he deserved it.
